Community Corner

New Canaan, Tree City USA

It's official. Signs were unveiled at two town locations Wednesday recognizing New Canaan's designation as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The intersection of South and Farm Avenues has a new sign at its northeast corner, which was officially unveiled by for the town of New Canaan, on Wednesday morning.

Pauley was joined by , , and Bill Pollack, Senior Associate with Keith E. Simpson Associates.

Unlike the signs that come and go on the fence at the southwest corner of this main town artery, this sign is intended as a permanent reminder of New Canaan's designation as a Tree City USA.

Bestowed by the , Pauley credited his predecessor with undertaking and successfully completing the application process. There are certain requirements for designation, which Pauley said Connecticut communities have by default, because the state has arborist and tree warden laws that, "satisfy many of the basic requirements." In addition, the standards and funding which New Canaan has for tree maintenance far exceeded the Foundation's requirements.

Nineteen towns in Connecticut are Tree City USAs including nearby Norwalk, Ridgefield and Stamford. There are more than 3400 communities in the country that have received the designation.

Another sign was unveiled at the intersection of New Norwalk Road and East Avenue. Both signs are mounted in iron scroll-work frames of a floral design done by .

Pauley said the locations were chosen for their prominence as entrances to the town, ensuring they are seen by as many people as possible.

"New Canaan is passionate about its trees and this is one more step in declaring that passion," he said.
