New Canaan Driver Charged with DUI After Flipping Off Woman

A New Canaan man was charged with driving under the influence after getting into a verbal argument with a woman to whom he allegedly gave the finger as he passed her while driving, police said Monday.

According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, New Canaan Police responded to reports of a verbal argument taking place along Cross Street on July 1 at approximately 3:06 p.m. They arrived to find a 55-year-old woman who told authorities a man had passed her while driving along Summer Street and flipped her off. Ogrinc said both parties then happened to be heading to Cross Street for independent reasons and an argument ensued when both drivers exited their vehicles.

The woman also told police she smelled alcohol on the man, who then verified her suspicions, according to Ogrinc. Officers then conducted a field sobriety test on the man, identified as Christopher B. Keating, 54, of South Avenue, and took him into custody following his alleged failure of the tests.

The man allegedly told police he only gave the woman the finger because he thought she was someone else who would have been driving a similar car that he was supposed to be meeting in the same area.

Keating was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He posted a $250 bond and was given a court date of July 14.
