New Canaan Man Arrested for Striking SUV, Leaving Scene

Arrest information is supplied by the New Canaan Police Department. It does not indicate convictions.

A 34-year-old New Canaan was arrested by warrant at 12 p.m. on Feb. 4 after leaving the scene of a minor car accident he caused and then lying to police about his involvement, officials said.

Jason Nelson, of Millport Avenue, was charged with evading responsibility and interfering with an officer.

He’s accused of cutting the left-hand turn from Park Street to Richmond Hill Road too tightly, hitting the front bumper of a SUV with his Jeep and then driving away, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department. The driver whose car was hit got Nelson’s license plate as well as a good look at Nelson himself, Ogrinc said.

With that information, police confronted Nelson—he told them that his girlfriend had been driving the car at the time, she said. Police say Nelson fit the description supplied by the complaining motorist, and they secured a warrant on the strength of that.

Nelson was released on $5,000 bond and scheduled to appear Feb. 15 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
