Whirlwind Diving Competes In Junior Nationals

The Whirlwind Diving Team out of the New Canaan YMCA attended the USA Diving Junior National Championships held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on August 1-6.

Eight members of the team qualified to compete in the prestigious event. To qualify, the divers had to place at the top of their age groups in the Summer Regional Championships held in Ewing, N.J, and the Summer Zone Championships, held in Rockville, M.D., over the past two months.

Sam Scribano, age 11 of Darien, was the top scorer on the team. In the 11-and-under three meter event, Scribano placed fourth with a score of 221.35. The following day he placed third in the one meter springboard event with a score of 214.05, a personal best.

“Going into the meet, I was hoping to make the top six,” Scribano said of his first national meet. “I never expected to do so well. When I placed fifth in the preliminaries on three-meter, I knew I could do better in the finals.

My coach Joe (Somma) told me to do my best and have fun. I ended up fourth and I’m really happy about that. I was really happy about both wins. It was a great experience and I made friends with divers from all over the country.”

Sean Burston, age 15 of Stamford, medaled in two events. He  placed 11th in the 14-15 yr boys three meter event. In the one-meter event, Burston placed fifth with a score of 399.95.

Jackson McGoldrick of Darien scooped up the 12th-place medal. Jackson has been dealing with a back injury for the past month.

Katie Warburg of Wilton, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick and Timmy Luz of Darien, Kylie Towbin of New Canaan and Rachel Burston of Stamford competed in the Championships with the Whirlwind team. The previous week, Rachel Burtson competed in Age Group Nationals and placed third in the three meter event.

“We had a successful year building up to the national championships," Somma said. "I’m proud of all the divers. They put in a lot of hard work; some had personal bests. It was exciting to watch.”
