Pedestrian Halts Main Street Traffic

In this week’s edition of “REALLY?” we consider pedestrians who arrive at a street corner, push the button, then cross the street before the signal arrives, forcing motorists to then wait through a pedestrian walk signal for no reason. Really?

Our debut installment of “REALLY?” earned both praise and criticism from several New Canaan Patch readers.

A look around town at botched and inconsiderate parking jobs—including this gem of a photo from one Patch user whose initials happen to spell out “BAD-Parker”—we received some comments from readers who felt we should have blurred out license plates. Thank you for that feedback.

Pushing My Button

This happens all the time when I’m waiting in my car at a light: A pedestrian walks to the corner, pushes the button to cross and—often without breaking stride—continues into the intersection and is across the road before the all-walk signal for pedestrians lights up.

Really?

I’d rather you just jaywalked without inconveniencing the rest of us.

One of my pet peeves also. I refer to it as "pedestrian hedging." Thanks for the post.
Patrick Henry March 15, 2013 at 02:48 pm
Drives me crazy, pun clearly intended.
Glen K Dunbar March 15, 2013 at 04:21 pm
I too see no point in pushing the signal to cross and then not wait. Either push the signal and wait...OR, do what I do and do NOT push the signal. Wait for it to be clear and just bolt across..of course I always try to be sure no Police are around as they can make a fuss over nonsense like that. In Greenwich they have Police on each corner of Greenwich Avenue and they FORCE you to wait. No sneaking by.
CW March 15, 2013 at 05:38 pm
Consider the behavior to be the "revenge of the pedestrians" against aggressive motorists.
But who hasn't been walking in a crosswalk in town and had to compete for space within the hatched lines with passing motorists. Or watched drivers sway and swerve on our roads as they talk and text on their cell phones. Pedestrians and motorists alike need to walk and drive safely!
Glen K Dunbar March 15, 2013 at 07:26 pm
Good Point CW. It use to be (and in some ways I feel still should) that Pedestrian has right of way not matter what ALWAYS. Lately, though Police (all over not just here) seem to nit pick on walker too. Society has no freedom at all it seems.
Bar Dumbglen March 15, 2013 at 07:35 pm
What about these nitwits who don't use the sidewalks and walk in the middle of the road? This is a big problem in town. I guess this will be a future post of "really" come spring time
Aver March 15, 2013 at 08:20 pm
...Really? As a pedestrian, who does not have a car, what is wrong exactly with pushing the button, waiting, and then going once it turns to walk? I shouldn't have to jaywalk, because it 'inconveniences' you to stop your car. Maybe the next addition of 'Really?' should have the situation at Elm and Main St. where cars hardly ever stop for pedestrians unless they're already walking into the street.
Baffled Resident March 15, 2013 at 10:51 pm
Suggestion for a future "Really?" column:
Bring the video camera and microphone to the area around Morse/South on a Friday after 2:30. Some parents might benefit from visual and auditory evidence of their little "darlings" behavior. Ugh.
Kendall L Owott March 16, 2013 at 12:35 am
This is another one for J Bauer and the fish oil. Look, you press the button and the walk sign comes on eventually and motorists should wait. Whether you think the system is broken after you wait a while and cross before the light changes doesn't change the fact that motorists have to stop when the walk sign goes on. It's not like pushing all the buttons in the elevator when you leave in order to screw up everybody else waiting for the elevator.
Can't we have a poll on New Canaan's best driveway instead? How about Glen's favorite dessert? O.K., fish oil it is.
Uhhhh March 16, 2013 at 01:08 am
Uhhhh...did you read the article?
Wait...what? March 16, 2013 at 02:00 am
Uhhhh....apparently not.
Wait...what? March 16, 2013 at 02:29 am
But I don't want my photos of my driveway on the Patch :)
Off topic, but considering the name of this new addition to the Patch, I'm grateful I didn't go with my first choice of usernames (which ironically, also happened to be my immediate response upon completion the first article I'd ever perused in the NC Patch) - "Wth...REALLY?!". I think it's best the article of which I speak remain unnamed.
Kendall L Owott March 16, 2013 at 03:19 am
O.K., no problem. Patch can make it an essay contest. 200 words of less, "Why My Driveway is the Best in New Canaan," There can be 2 categories: Ridgey Division and Towney Division, because construction and drainage may depend on topography.
Next week: Best Overhead Wires. Week after next: Best Plumbing. Whaddya think, kids? Let's keep it positive and civil.
Michael Dinan (Editor) March 16, 2013 at 03:23 am
Great ideas, thanks!
Wait...what? March 16, 2013 at 04:08 am
Do you honestly think I can convey the full glory of my driveway (much less my plumbing) in 200 words? We might just have to go with the photos. Of course, this creates the problem of deciding which photos would be best. The photos in my office give a better overall view, but the ones hanging in my dining room next to the awe-inspiring shots my guest bathroom toilet better illustrate the intricate design work and superior craftsmanship my driveway (AND plumbing) possess.
I would, however, like to ask that the "Best Overhead Wires" contest be delayed for at least 2 weeks. As humiliating as this is to admit, my overhead wires sag a bit, and the coloring is terribly (dare I say) pedestrian.
Marc R. March 16, 2013 at 05:33 am
What sort of things have you witnessed? In my time (only a few years ago), it really wasn't bad, but I've heard that the kids descend on the town now like locusts (I'm not saying that in a negative way necessarily, just that they're everywhere)
Glen K Dunbar March 16, 2013 at 01:07 pm
Aver. You are lucky not to have a car. Wish I did not have a car. When I was a teen I did NOT want a driver licesne. But, a certain police person basicly who taught me to drive forced me saying I had to help my parents and Nana. What a nit wit He was...I could not and still can't even help myself and He was saying (as they do now) that Glen should sacrifice and save the world w/no reward. Grown ups...
Aver, I would just walk. Do not be bullied. You cross if, when, where You please. GLEN
S Dogood March 16, 2013 at 04:02 pm
I am unclear about the complaint is. Looking at it from the pedestrians prospective they approach a crosswalk and see cars coming. Should they wait until there is enough of a break in the cars to cross or press button.
I see a long line of cars coming and I did not see a break coming soon. I push the button to ensure I would not be waiting a long time. Now that the button is pressed any driver unfortunate enough to hit the red light will be delayed for that period of time. Now that I have pressed the button the delay on the driver is going to happen regardless of what I do now. Why should I wait to cross if the long line of cars stops before they get to the intersection? If the complaint is because I did not wait after I pressed the button, I do not see validity complaint. If the complaint is that I should do a better job of assessing if a break in the cars is near, that is a judgment / courtesy.
Glen K Dunbar March 16, 2013 at 07:27 pm
Dogwood: the complaint is to clarify what I am/was saying is my life stinks and I need a bail out QUICK. As for this topic my complaint is that it is all nonsense. I have and will continue to walk when/where/as I please unless a Police is around then I will sprout a Halo and put my horns inside. AND maybe a fake Poly-Anna smile After all..am I not your stooge New Canaan???
Bill March 17, 2013 at 07:14 pm
S, you've illustrated my point -- this is why I call it "pedestrian hedging" (see first post above). In my view, one should decide BEFORE pushing the button whether they will wait for the crossing signal, or whether they will take their chances in there being a break in traffic. If they want to take their chances, that's fine, but then they should not press the button. If you leave early after pushing the button you have inconvenienced all of the cars at the intersection for your sole benefit, and that is the point of etiquette. The fact that the cars don't have to wait any longer than they would have had to wait had you, in fact, waited for the light, is irrelevant. The point is that if the button hadn't been pushed, the cars wouldn't have had to wait. If someone else happens to push the button, that's different. The person who pushed the button should wait, but (jaywalking considerations aside) that shouldn't have any bearing on what others decide to do.
Baffled Resident March 17, 2013 at 09:27 pm
You would think we wouldn't still have this problem in 2013. Why is it still pushbutton? Why not sensors that can just detect the need of whether or not to activate the walk signal, and turn the traffic signals red?
Esprit de Corps March 17, 2013 at 10:47 pm
This is an interesting mental exercise for a Sunday afternoon or evening. The law is clear: Don't cross the street unless the pedestrian signal says walk. In an attempt to impose some sort of etiquette upon the process, some would suggest that pedestrians make speed and distance estimates about cars that don't observe speed limits, or stop signs and may also tailgate.
The hapless pedestrian is also required to know how long the wait will be until the pedestrian signal flashes walk, too. It is, of course, impossible and might require the pedestrian to step off the curb -- perhaps illegally -- to see around a car parked very close to the corner in order to observe traffic. Close parking to the corner may be legal because the parking commission values parking spaces over safety, as for example in front of the CVS parking lot on Cherry St. This is all too much for mere human pedestrians to accomplish. Push the button, wait until the light changes and then walk. If someone rushing somewhere or other has to wait a little and is forced to observe a traffic signal, so much the better. Happy St. Patrick's Day.
Glen K Dunbar March 18, 2013 at 01:43 pm
Corps: "mental exercise" Oh how I need a mental bail out. This town give me NADA.
I still say to pedestrians... JUST GO if nobody is looking.
Canaanite March 22, 2013 at 07:28 pm
This is a ridiculous complaint . . . One that can only be fixed with motion senstitive lights that turn green when they sense a pedestrian approaching a walkway. If you are in a car, you have to yield to pedestrians, and you take the risk of having to yield for walk signals. Big freaking deal. Twenty seconds out of your day.
Aver March 29, 2013 at 06:44 pm
Uhhh, and wait, I did actually read the article! Thank-you for your question. I was referring to the caption under the picture. Which apparently you didn't read...? That's okay. Happens to everyone. So here is the caption: "This guy pushed the button on Main Street in front of Garelick & Herbs, then walked across the street without waiting for the go-ahead. He didn't need the walk signal at all to get where he was going, so why inconvenience motorists by pushing for the walk signal?"
uhhhhhh March 29, 2013 at 07:31 pm
Uhhhhhh....again...READ.
Nothing wrong with "pushing the button, waiting, and then going once it turns to walk". there IS something wrong with pushing the button, then jaywalking. Or "hedging" as someone else referred it to. Either wait for the walk signal, or just jaywalk without pushing the button. One or the other.
Houston Blackwell April 5, 2013 at 12:35 pm
Dinan, and everyone else that has issues with this....get over yourselves. Why don't you set up a camera to record how many motorists blow through stop signs and nearly hit pedestrians in crosswalks that don't have signals?
BTW, that pedestrian simply got a small head start. The walk signal came on well before he finished crossing the street. It also appears to be early in the morning based on the lack of traffic, why don't you get some gumption and do this rubbish during the middle of the day?

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" if fallacious at best, disingenuous at worst.

Unknown to most parents, children’s data is being shared beyond the school district with sixRead More agencies inside the Utah Data Alliance and UTREX, according to Utah Technology Director John Brandt. The student data is further being “mashed” with federal databases, according to federal Education Dept. Chief of Staff Joanne Weiss: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/inside-school-research/2012/07/ed_urges_states_to_make_data_s.html While John Brandt assures us that only a handful of people in Utah have access to the personally identifiable data of children, recent alterations to federal FERPA (Famly Education Rights Privacy Act) regulations which were made by the U.S. Dept of Education, have radically redefined terms and widened the window of groups who can access private data without parental consent. For more on that, see the lawsuit against the U.S. Dept of Education on the subject: http://epic.org/apa/ferpa/default.html But first, an interjection: I want to introduce this article: http://seattleducation2010.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/your-students-privacy/ I like this article because it exposes the facts plainly, that parents are unaware that their children’s information is being shared without parental permission, beyond the school, beyond the district, and even beyond the state. It is verifiable and true. What it means: Courses taken, grades earned, every demographic piece of information, including family names and income, is being watched by the U.S. government via schools. Verify for yourself: The U.S. Dept. of Education’s own explanation is here, showing why SLDS systems exist: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/slds/factsheet.html
