Despite wintry chills and hovering clouds, autumn was in full swing at the New Canaan Nature Center’s 40th Annual Fall Fair on Saturday, Oct. 17. Rain was in the forecast but Mother Nature held out and allowed for a day full of everything from pumpkin decorating to pony rides to a pie-eating contest.
The event—which was attended by more than a thousand people throughout the day—is a New Canaan tradition that welcomes families to enjoy a wealth of activities that celebrate the arrival of autumn.
Children with chilled rosy cheeks beamed as they were escorted around a ring atop a pony while others bravely embarked on a journey down the Haunted Path, where witches popped out of the woods with plastic cauldrons full of candy. The pumpkin decorating table was a popular activity, where children were able to pick a small pumpkin and decorate it with, say, candy corn noses and cauliflower eyes.
But the Fall Fair’s biggest hit seemed to be its second annual pie-eating contest, where contestants held their hands behind their backs and plunged face first into the apple treat before them and raced to finish first.
