Week in Review: Big News, It's Officially August

Burritos, school board brevity, and a hyperlocal Web site made news this week.

It's been a month since the 4th of July, and all the left over fireworks seem to have been spent. The Sidewalk Sale has had its annual run of Elm Street, though there are still a few "indoor sidewalk sales" lingering downtown.

The little league season is just about wrapped up with the All-Star 11s taking the state tournament and competing at the regionals in Maine this weekend. The YMCA swimming and diving teams are also out of town for championship meets.

Classes at the Lapham Center are over until the fall, and the Outback is taking its annual sabbatical. The town Republican and Democratic slates have been decided. Most of the town boards and commissions took the month off from meeting.

It is officially August.

The Board of Education did meet, briefly, approving the establishment of a special committee on the school district budget, and moving to create another one on board governance. Board chair Kathy Smith delivered on her promise of a short meeting—it only lasted an hour.

The Board of Selectmen appointed new members to the Personnel Advisory Board and the Park and Recreation Commission. They gave the town IT department the go-ahead to purchase some new switches and get started with a town network overhaul. And they authorized the Public Works Department to buy fuel for town buildings and vehicles in bulk when it’s cheap.

A couple of NCHS grads started selling their tasty new brand of burritos at Walter Stewart’s. And New Canaan Resident Will Gregory officially announced his bid for the GOP nomination to challenge Congressman Jim Himes here in the 4th District.

Property taxes came due. I hope you got yours in on time.
