New Canaan Registrar Reminds Citizens of Day-Of Registration & Voting

Election Day is right around the corner, New Canaan! This year, Connecticut voters are able to register and vote all on Election Day if they've missed the deadline to register prior to the actual voting process. Immediately below, you'll find a statement from the New Canaan Registrar of Voters George Cody:

"Registration and voting for previously non-registered citizens will be conducted only in the offices of the Registrars of Voters, at 237 Elm Street, 2nd floor.  This is the building connected to Stewart’s Market.

All prospective voters who appear at the polls and are not currently registered will be re-directed to the Registrars location for registration and voting.  Voters, who have moved into New Canaan from other Connecticut Municipalities, will also have to appear at the Registrars Office.  Registered voters who have moved within town will be allowed to complete the paperwork and vote at the polls.

The Election Day Registration (EDR) process will involve completing the voter registration application in the Registrar location, submitting two forms of identification that;  1) shows your picture and name, such as a current drivers license, birth certificate, Social Security Card, college photo ID, passport, or other government issued identification; and 2) If the  ID’s do not show a current residence, then identification showing a current residential address in New Canaan is required.  This could be a driver’s license, utility bill, rental or mortgage document, paycheck, property tax bill, or other government document.

EDR officials will verify and enter the information into the State Voter file, check with the former town (For in-state transfers) to verify that the applicant has not voted, and to remove the name from their lists.  This process may involve a ten or fifteen minute delay. The voter will then be given a special EDR envelope and ballot with information to be completed.  Once the ballot is sealed in the envelope, the ballot will be deposited in a repository for counting at the end of the day.

The polls will be open from 6:00am until 8:00 pm, with District 1 voting in the New Canaan High School Gym, and Districts 2&3 voting in the Saxe Gym.  School will be in session, so please follow any special directions at the polls."
