Learn about the Library’s new Dog Tales! reading program and meet Brasil, a registered therapy dog, and his handler Don Smith.  This lecture will give an overview of therapy dogs and their success stories and experiences partnering with the Reading Education Assistance Dog (R.E.A.D.) program.  R.E.A.D. programs have been proven to improve reading skills and build confidence in children who read to therapy dogs.  This presentation will take place on Saturday, March 2 at 2:00 pm in the Rotary Room at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road.

Don Smith is the area representative for the International R.E.A.D. program and former director of “Healing Hounds” animal-assisted therapy at Stamford Hospital.  Brasil has appeared on “Pet Talk” on Channel 12 and received national recognition as “Therapy Dog of the Year” and the Willow Award as “Whippet of the Year.”

This program is one of the offerings in the Library’s 2013 One Book One Town celebration.  This year’s pick, Wonder, by R. J. Palacio invites us all to “Choose Kindness” in our dealings with difficult social situations.  Reading aloud is often painfully difficult for young readers in school. This program offers children confidence-building in reading and themselves.
