New England Academy of Dance Offers Act II-Only Nutcracker Performance for Children

Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, the most widely performed and attended ballet in the world, is often a child’s first introduction to classical ballet. With this in mind, New England Dance Theatre (NEDT) is pleased to once again offer an abbreviated, one-hour performance of this very special ballet for their littlest audience members.

The fun begins on Saturday, December 6th at 11:00 am, New Canaan High School. Skipping over the lovely, but long, Act I Christmas Eve Party Scene, this unique show will jump right into the enchanted Kingdom of the Sweets, a dazzling display of sets, costumes, music, and classical ballet that promises to delight an audience of any age.

“Not only is this portion of the show an absolute fantasy, with dancing candy canes, ginger cookies, flowers and more, but the children in our audience are encouraged to actively participate in a variety of ways,” explains Ginna Ortiz, NEDT Director. “Before the curtain is even raised, the audience is taught to clap along with our Spanish dancers, to wave scarves during our mysterious Arabian dance, and to cheer on the Candy Canes who will dance right off the stage and into the audience to hand out sweets.”

Parents who might be otherwise reluctant to try the full-length ballet, will be thrilled with this unique, child-friendly, classical ballet experience. The fun even continues after the show when our audience members are invited on stage to learn some ballet steps from the Nutcracker cast, including the fabulously delicious, Sugar Plum Fairy.
