To Market, To Market

Two updates to the local food-shopping scene

I love going grocery shopping every day.  I like to browse a different store or farmers market each day and let it inspire me for my dinner menu that night.  If something speaks to me, I buy it and it gets served at my family’s dinner table.  It’s a great strategy, because it allows me to cook freshest food items each day and it keeps my refrigerator un-cluttered.

I heard a couple of exciting updates to the local food-shopping scene and I just had to check them out.

I received a postcard a few days ago informing me that Caraluzzi’s in Georgetown is re-opening.  How exciting!  I have been to Caraluzzi’s many times and was always excited to find unique food items there.  But the atmosphere there always felt a little dull.  Over time, I found some other favorites and almost forgot about Caraluzzi’s.  The new and improved store is much livelier.  It is studded with an expansive seafood section.  It has a full service butcher’s counter as well as a large selection of artisan cheeses.  There is even a pastry case featuring store-made cakes and decadent individual desserts.  My favorite addition to the new Caraluzzi’s is the café and gelato bar!  Now you can order up a yummy panini and sip your freshly frothed cappuccino while you watch the buzzing activity at the store.  There is a wonderful seating area at the café that makes it a perfect place to lunch or snack should you need a food-break.  For parents with young children – imagine how much simpler your grocery trip will be, now that your child can savor a yummy gelato while you shop in peace!  :-)

The next big news is that Kings Market recently opened its doors in Old Greenwich.  I am familiar with Kings Market from back in the days when I used to live in New Jersey.  It was always my favorite store to visit.  If I ever needed a flowers, dessert or cake for a special occasion – it HAD to come from Kings.  Their produce was always top quality as well.  Browsing the store today, warm and delicious memories flooded my mind.  This new store in Old Greenwich seems to have a much larger selection of prepared foods – from what I remember.  There seemed to be limitless choices suitable for any craving.  The dessert counter made me feel like I had arrived back home after ages!  Hazelnut cake.  Check!  Chocolate mousse.  Check!  Berry tart.  Check!   Yes!  Yes!! YESSS!!!!!

Where DIDN'T you learn to write?? Jane Himmel May 22, 2013 at 01:27 pm "This has CONVINCED MYRead More GROWING CONVICTION that Patch has moved complete..."

I just called Staples. This is really disturbing to me. If I don't get a satisfactory answer, IRead More will let people know and I will also decide whether to continue shopping there. I do not like to give my money to unethical businesses.

This has convinced my growing conviction that Patch has moved completely away from any pretense ofRead More being a news source and is simply an electronic bulletin board. By abandoning their prior procedure of approving posts before they go up, they are letting anything go on and then taking them down if they're reported. By then, it's too late: the poster has gotten their message across during the time it's in the lineup. I only check in with Patch occasionally now and so many people in town won't read it at all anymore. I think we need to be honest with ourselves about what kind of a public forum this venue is. This doesn't reflect well on Staples if they are using subterfuge and violating Terms of Use on Patch either.

New Canaan hockey players are better off playing at Sono, Ridgefield or Stamford Youth Hockey.
