New Canaan Woman Hoping Community Will Help Free the Children in Nicaragua

New Canaan's Lizzy Burke is the co-president of the local Free the Children chapter and, in June, she hopes to travel to Nicaragua to participate in various sustainability-focused activities.

According to the club's outline, the hope to accomplish several things during the trip:

  • Create and ensure a sustainable future for children in rural areas, some who are involved in child labour in coffee and sugar cane fields, by providing them with access to and removing obstacles to a quality education.

  • Focus on school-building in communities which do not have appropriate school room capacity or dilapidated school buildings.

  • Help alleviate poverty and contribute to rural community development by putting into service all five pillars of Adopt a Village.
Burke is hoping GoFundMe will help her raise money to covers some costs associated with the trip. She's looking for about $4,000 and has raised about a quarter of that so far.
