New Canaan vs. Hand moved to Dunning Field

The New Canaan Rams football team has a daunting task at hand, having to face defending Class L State champion Tigers in the season opener.

But at least they won't have to burn too much gas to get there.

The inaugural FCIAC - SCC showdown between two of the top programs in the state will be held at New Canaan's Dunning Field on 9/11 at 6:30pm.

The event was originally intended to be held at Madison's legendary Surf Club. However, that venue is undergoing a renovation, so the game had to be moved to the field at Daniel Hand High School. Many football folks I spoke with expressed concern that the field at Daniel Hand would not be able to properly support the inevitable throng of spectators anticipated for the game. Dunning Field can hold 3000+ fans, and oftentimes has packed more at recent games, such as the Turkey Bowl and NCYF Night. The move makes a little more sense.

What would make even more sense would be to figure out a way play at a neutral location such as Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport, which can accommodate 12,000 fans. But New Canaan players and coaches must be happy with the news of this newly-added home game.

Regardless, it will still be a war for the Rams.
