NCY Caimans Swim Team at YMCA Long Course National Championships 2013

The New Canaan YMCA Caiman Swim team just returned from an extremely successful YMCA National Championship swim meet in Atlanta at the 1996 Olympic pool at Georgia Tech.  11 members of the Caimans participated in 49 individual events, recording a remarkable 44 lifetime best swims.  Topping the list for the Caimans were Robert Lesko and Steven Skaperdas who finished 15th in the 50 breaststroke and 18th in the 200 butterfly. Steven, the only graduating senior, is headed to Connecticut College where he will be specializing in distance freestyles as well as the butterfly.

Youth was the theme of the meet for the New Cannan squad.  Lizzy Colwell and Rhyan Brode are both 13.  Lizzy’s sister Katie Colwell and Wesley Fales are both 14 and Meghan Egan is 15.  All had great meets, and look to anchor a very bright future for the Caimans.

Leadership was provided by a cadre of rising seniors.  Jenna Egan, Alex Aliapoulis, Victioria Chao and Stephan Pla led the youthful team with strong performances.  Notable were Pla’s two top thirty finishes in the 50 and 100 Breastrokes.

All in all the coaching staff was very pleased with the results.  New head coach Mike Ferraro commented on the meet. “It was great meet for us.  I really got to see what these kids can do when the pressure is on.  They love to race, and consistently rose to the challenge of a national stage.  I can’t wait to get started with the new season in September.” The future is bright for the Caiman National Team.
