Obituaries

Elizabeth Quinn, former Saxe Assistant Principal, 90

While with New Canaan schools, she travelled the US assisting teachers in the development of science programs.

As reported by the Hoyt Funeral Home:

December 18, 1920 - November 26, 2011

Elizabeth A, Quinn of Connecticut, formerly of Rhode Island, died on 
November 25, 2011 in New Jersey. Born in Cumberland, R.I., Miss Quinn attended St. Patrick’s School, Cumberland High School, and Rhode Island College of Education, at which she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. When she moved to Connecticut in 195l, she earned her Master's Degree in Education at Fairfield University. Her career in Education, which spanned 55 years, began in Seekonk, Mass., where she was a teacher of science and physical education from 1942 to 1951 at Seekonk Jr. High School. In 1951 Miss Quinn moved to Connecticut to become Asst. Principal and teacher of science and physical education at Saxe Jr. High School, New Canaan. Miss Quinn was very active in her profession, being elected President of the Connecticut Science Teachers Association, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Science Teachers Association. With both approval and moral support of the New Canaan Board of Education, she was able to travel across the U.S. assisting teachers with programs to improve their offerings in science education for students of all ages and capabilities. For this effort, Miss Quinn was honored as a Fellow of AAAS (American Assoc. for Advancement of Science), the highest award available. 

As a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a world-wide association that works to improve education for all, she assumed leadership roles in the local chapter. 

Besides these activities, she supported the programs of. the De La Salle Christian Brothers, an Order to which her brother, Brother B. Jarnes Quinn, belonged. In recognition of her support, she was honored as an Affiliate of the Christian Brothers. 

Proud of her Irish heritage, and grateful for the opportunities to fulfill the dreams her mother prayed would be realities, Miss Quinn lived a happy and productive life, grateful to all with whom Miss Quinn had been associated. May she rest in peace! 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday December 1, 2011 at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Wilton, CT at 10:00 AM. Interment will be held on Friday in Mt Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland, RI.
