Georgia Mae Williams, longtime resident of New Canaan, died peacefully Tuesday April 16, 2013 at her home with her devoted caregiver, Tone Matusha by her side.

Georgia was born on May 22, 1919 in rural South Carolina to Carrie Mae Hall and Jimmy Williams. Her mother died shortly after Georgia’s birth from the influenza outbreak of that time and was raised by her Aunt Jane Trapp in Strother, South Carolina. She was very close to her aunt until her aunt’s death in 1989.

Georgia made her way as a young woman from South Carolina to New York, where she honed her skills as an astute business woman. She moved out to CT and was employed as a domestic worker for several families. She married William Albert Walker in the 1940s but the marriage ended in the 1950s. In 1971 she proudly purchased her home in New Canaan, where she lived for her remaining years.

Georgia was an active member of the New Canaan Community Baptist Church, loved singing in the choir and was honored as the Oldest Missionary of the church. She was known for her plucky sense of humor, her sound head for business and her willingness to work hard at any endeavor.

She leaves behind her nephew Jimmy Williams, of Union South Carolina, his daughter Anitra Mims, and many nieces and nephews, as well as longstanding friends. Georgia deeply appreciated the concern and care provided to her in the last few years of her life by Jeff Holland, who oversaw her every need.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday April 23, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Community Baptist Church, Cherry Street 174 Cherry Street, New Canaan , CT Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church 1 hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the church in her name. The Hoyt Funeral Home, New Canaan has charge of arrangements.
