Margaret Kunkel Ploss, 79

Lover of music, the outdoors, theater and children.

Margaret “Peg” Kunkel Ploss, long-time New Canaan resident, passed quietly in her home August 30, 2011 after a valiant fight with cancer.

Peg was born February 9th 1932 in Clifton Springs New York to Robert Scott Kunkel and Martha Burt Kunkel as the oldest of five but grew up in Gloversville. She was known for her love of music, the outdoors, the theater and children both hers and others.

Peg held sort of a dual citizenship between New Canaan and Wilton.

In New Canaan she was known for her work with kids at The YMCA while her husband, the late Richard M Ploss was on staff there. After joining The Methodist Church Peg became active in the Children’s Service Circle making friends she kept for the remainder of her life. At The Day Care Center of New Canaan she was known as Peg to over 20 years’ worth of students in the afterschool program.   Finally she served as an Instructional Aide for the Science Department at New Canaan High School for 20 years.

In Wilton she was known first as the receptionist for the late Dr. David Franklin then as a regular at The Village Luncheonette. As a long-time member of The Wilton Presbyterian Church she participated in both the Choir and the Bell Choir. She was active at The Wilton Playshop both onstage (once) and backstage finally serving as President.

Peg was predeceased by her sister Dorothy Lee Kunkel, her husband Richard M Ploss and her parents Dr. Robert Scott and Martha Burt Kunkel. She is survived by her brothers Dr. Robert Kunkel Jr., Dr. Alan Kunkel, Dr. Frederick Kunkel, her children and their families, her daughter Wendy Hower and her husband Robert of New Canaan, Connecticut and her sons Richard “Skip” E Ploss and his wife Laura and daughter Sarah of Wilton, Connecticut and Scott T Ploss and his wife Dennise Traeger of Ashland, Oregon and children Dan and Katie.

A memorial service is planned for 1:30pm Saturday October 1st 2011 at the Wilton Presbyterian Church 48 New Canaan Road, Wilton, CT.
