After watching last week's Republican debate for First Selectman, I have to applaud Rob Mallozzi’s practical vision for improving New Canaan’s downtown business situation and tightening our town’s budget process.
The combination of a weakened economy, steep commercial rents, and competition from e-shopping have given our local businesses a real challenge. To keep New Canaan the wonderful, “Mayberry" type town it is, we have to find a way to help our local businesses. It’s clear that Rob has a plan to help local businesses thrive while drawing shoppers and diners from neighboring towns to spend their dollars here in New Canaan.
In terms of our town’s fiscal responsibility I was so impressed with Rob’s candor and at times “frustrated anger” while discussing how our town’s money has been used. I am appalled that a $650,000 court judgment along with a $1.1 million legal fee could so handily be managed without an uproar from our town representatives. I can’t imagine Rob Mallozzi sitting still while our town was being billed $1.75 million of unexpected charges. I’m pretty sure he would be asking “How did our town get into this situation? Why is the legal bill nearly two times the court judgment, and why has the community been kept in the dark?" The old expression “Nobody Likes a Surprise” comes to mind.
I really believe that with Rob’s guidance our town government will better serve the community and our local businesses. Rob for the Job…he gets my vote!
