Plays, Pipes, Pancakes and St. Patty's Day

Local theatre, concerts, comedy and (yum) maple syrup this weekend...

  • Where: , 11 Farm Road
  • When: Thursday-Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
  • Why go: The "award-winning New Canaan High School Drama Department" presents its winter musical three nights running. "The Drowsy Chaperone,” book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and music and lyrics by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, has been described as a “musical within a comedy,” according to the by a school representative. “Don't miss this funny, crazy, tapping, flying, singing, and totally enjoyable show.”
  • Price: $12 and $15

Annual Syrup Saturday & Pancake Brunch

  • When: Saturday, 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m.   
  • Why go: All ages can take part in this annual celebration that enables visitors to observe how maple syrup gets from trees to pancakes. Local maple syrup and maple baked goods will be for sale. The event also includes a hike along “Maple Lane” with naturalists, a welcoming campfire and a take-home craft for kids. St. Patrick’s Day Dinner Specials

  • When: Thursday, St. Patty’s Day
  • Why go: Specials including Traditional Sheperd’s Pie and corned beef & cabbage with boiled potatoes and carrots and onions are bound to satisfy both diners and leprechauns. Doug Allen will provide the music.

IMAX: "Alaska: Spirit of the Wild" and "Whales"

  • Where: The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk, 10 North Water St.
  • When: "Alaska" daily at 2 p.m. through April 7; "Whales" daily at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. through May 26
  • Why go: The viewing of wild places and wild faces doesn't get any better on film or even in person, necessarily. "Alaska" won an Oscar for Best Short Subject Documentary in 1998. In "Whales" you'll see many of these wondrous marine mammals lifesize! Make it a double feature.
  • Price: $9 for adults, $8 for seniors 65+ and $6.50 for children 2-12. Aquarium members receive $2 discounts.   • Why go: "This semi-autobiographical telling of Neil Simon’s coming to terms with the death of his beloved first wife followed by his love affair and subsequent marriage to actress Marsha Mason" is both "funny and poignant" as it revolves around four brilliantly penned characters: George Schneider, the mourning writer; Jenny Malone, a level-headed actress; Leo, George’s brother, a brash press agent who’s married but has a roving eye; and Faye, Jenny’s utterly clueless but enchanting friend,"according to the theatre's description. The production features Steven Bendler, Deborah Burke, Tom Butterworth and Carin Freidag.

  Bags o’ Pipin’ with Irish Fare

  • Why go: Enjoy traditional Irish faves such as corned beef & cabbage on rye and also a dinner, sheperd’s pie, Mulligan stew and others – all to the tunes of bagpipes at 1 and 7 p.m.

Three Concerts to Get Your Groove On

  • Where: Fairfield Theatre Stage One, 70 Sanford St.
  • When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, all at 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday: Band Together, a benefit concert for Operation Hope and the Center for Women and Families, with Brazilian and island music. $25 (members save $3).
  • Saturday: Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer Jeff Coffin's Mu'tet blending “African, New Orleans, Indian, funk, jazz, folk, Gypsy, rock, fusion, Brazilian and other types of music,” according to the online description. $22 (members save $5).
  • Sunday: Blues it with Tommy Castro & Johnny A. “…the two bluesmen bring an unforgettable night of guitar wizardry.” $35 (members save $5).
