POLL: CT Politicians React to Paul Ryan, Romney's VP Pick [Updated]

The pick stirs up debate among two U.S. Senate candidates, and draws praise from Republicans and pause from at least one Democrat.

Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's Vice President selection today of Congressman Paul Ryan has stirred up a frenzy of activity in Connecticut's political scene.

Chris Shays, a former Congressman who is facing off against Linda McMahon Tuesday in the Republican Primary for Connecticut's U.S. Senate seat, calls Ryan a "great pick."

"Governor Romney could not have made a better choice for his running mate than his decision to name my friend and former colleague, Congressman Paul Ryan," Shays said, adding, in his , "He is an experienced leader, trying to restore fiscal sanity to Washington."

Meanwhile, Congressman Chris Murphy (D-5) took Romney's announcement as an opportunity to engage McMahon. In Tuesday's Primary, Democrats will choose between Murphy and Susan Bysiewicz, Connecticut's former Secretary of the State. Bysiewicz has not yet made a statement about Romney's pick.

The Murphy campaign said, "This morning, Linda McMahon tried to reverse her position on the massive cuts to Medicare contained in Congressman Paul Ryan’s disastrous budget plan."

“Linda McMahon said just months ago that she supports 'some' of Congressman Ryan’s disastrous plan, including 'taking a look' at its massive cuts to Medicare,” said Murphy spokeswoman Taylor Lavender. “So, which parts of Congressman Ryan’s plan does she support? And why hasn’t she endorsed her party’s nominee for vice president?"

"Chris Murphy would never endorse a presidential or vice presidential candidate who would give massive tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals and corporations that ship American jobs overseas, shift costs onto middle class families already struggling to make ends meet, and force over 575,000 Connecticut seniors to pay more out of pocket costs for their health care by ending Medicare as we know it.”

McMahon campaign manager Corry Bliss pushed back.

“Leave it to Chris Murphy to take the news of the day and use it to try to distract from the fact that he has no plan to create jobs and improve the economy," Bliss says in a statement. “Linda McMahon will never support a budget that cuts Medicare."

So far, not in a statement or in any posts on her social media networks, has McMahon lended her outright support to Paul Ryan.

Romney announced the decision in a press release Saturday morning, titled “America’s Comeback Team,” as well as through his “Mitt’s VP” smart phone app.

The Huffington Post notes that both liberals and conservatives will be “thrilled” with Romney’s choice.

Ryan, 42, is in his seventh term in Congress representing Wisconsin’s First Congressional District. He’s also a chairman of the House Budget Committee, and last year he unveiled a counter budget titled “Roadmap for America’s Future,” which proposed to eliminate the federal deficit over a multi-year period.

Democrats and liberals derided the budget, however, saying it focused more on cuts to spending for social programs and less on tax cuts for the wealthy.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, a Democrat seeking re-election representing Connecticut's Third Congressional District, also responded to the news:

“America is going to have a conversation about the choice before us this November. Thanks to his last two proposed budgets, we all know what Paul Ryan’s vision for America is. The American middle class will face higher taxes and less help with education. Seniors will get a voucher and higher bills for health care. And the children of the most vulnerable will get pushed back into poverty."

Steve Obsitnik, a Republican running to unseat Democrat Jim Himes in the Fourth Congressional District, offered this:

"In selecting Rep. Ryan to be his Vice President, Gov. Romney is drawing the starkest of contrasts between himself and the President."

"This election may come down to a single issue: 'Should the federal government continue down its present path of fiscal irresponsibility, or has the time come to get our financial house in order?'"

"All across Connecticut’s 4th District families work hard to make ends meet; they make the tough decisions on their budgets and try to save money for a rainy day. Our government should act like our families. We need fiscal responsibility for today while investing in the future."

Himes has not yet released a statement on the news.

Excellent choice! Can't wait to see the debate between Ryan and Biden--a knowledgeable, very savvy and articulate Ryan against the bumbling, gaffe-prone Biden! Paul Ryan will be perfect as our nation's VP, because he accurately sees both the dire financial situation the government has brought us to, and the SOLUTIONS to get us back on the road to PROSPERITY.
Steve Obsitnik, "great choice" to replace the 'phony moderate' Jim Himes in the 4th CD, accurately assessed the Ryan choice, and the stakes in this election: "Gov. Romney is drawing the starkest of contrasts between himself and the President. ...“'Should the federal government continue down its present path of fiscal irresponsibility, or has the time come to get our financial house in order?' "All across Connecticut’s 4th District families work hard to make ends meet; they make the tough decisions on their budgets and try to save money for a rainy day. Our government should act like our families. We need fiscal responsibility for today while investing in the future." Romney/Ryan will bring back that "fiscal responsibility ." I will be voting for Obsitnik to replace Himes, who has voted for ALL the 5 TRILLIONS $$$ of deficit spending, and of course I will be voting for Romney/Ryan. For most thinking Americans, who are not either on the dole, public sector union members or crony capitalist bff of Obama, Obama has obviously failed and needs to be FIRED! This should be a no brainer, folks!!

Fantastic Choice, Liberals cannot possibly critique this choice.

Seems as if the Catholic Church can.
Catholic Leaders to Rep. Paul Ryan: Stop Distorting Church Teaching to Justify Immoral Budget April 13, 2012, 10:20 am | Posted by Casey Schoeneberger Nearly 60 prominent theologians, priests, nuns and national Catholic social justice leaders released a statement today refuting Rep. Paul Ryan’s claim that his GOP budget proposal reflects Catholic teaching on care for the poor, which he made in an interview earlier this week with the Christian Broadcasting Network. The group of Catholic leaders — including a former high-ranking U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops official, a priest in Rep. Ryan’s district and the leadership team of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas — called on Ryan to “reconsider his radical budget proposal and refrain from distorting Church teaching.” “If Rep. Ryan thinks a budget that takes food and healthcare away from millions of vulnerable people upholds Catholic values, then he also probably believes Jesus was a Tea Partier who lectured the poor to stop being so lazy and work harder,” said John Gehring, Catholic Outreach Coordinator at Faith in Public Life. “This budget turns centuries of Catholic social teaching on its head. These Catholic leaders and many Catholics in the pews are tired of faith being misused to bless an immoral agenda.”

Why does the Catholic church have such a strong hold on this Country and the world for that matter. It is only ONE Religiion. I respect people right to worship this way. I am no religion. I am too mentally ill. If I were to choose a church I would choose to be Jewish or Mormon. They have strcit rules like all religions. YET, they seem to really care and want to help the little guy out
Four Jacks August 12, 2012 at 11:43 pm
Maybe the Vatican can sell some of it's vast art collection to help the poor. Why does the church need all of this gold and art??? That alone is a SIN.

Wait, who is that at the door?

Mr./Ms. Hollywood2, you have an offer on the table and I gave you the answer. You offered: "$100 to anyone that outs Dumbar." I gave you Dumbar's web site and you reneged on your offer.
In the event that you can't type and were referring to Glen Dunbar, you have made a mistake and can correct it. Then we will all know you are trying to remove Mr. Dunbar's nom de plume identity protection. However if you actually meant to type Dumbar, then you owe me $100 in US currency. Which is it?

Yeah let's have someone who wants to take away the health care of senior citizens and the poorest Americans and give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires! Because that's such a wonderful solution for reducing our deficit.

Obama wants to take away health from the old?? I find that hard to believe. Obama is a regular guy and I find it hard to believe He would do this in his plan. Noone really knows that the plan entails?? I wish I did. Also, if it is been approved..where is it?? Why are my wife/daughter not insured? Why is the Husky-A discriminate against me. ??
to Mr. or Mrs Corps. Thanks for trying to stand up for me. I appreciate it. Some of those on here just do not understand I am a victim of my dear sweet Mother and this town. Not everyone in this town is rotten. But, some are. As for them trying to out me. Good luck. I use my real name now. But, if I was ever outted I would come back under a phony name I pick out of phone book and create a new email too. the only way I will stop my campaign is if my life get easier GLEN
Paul M Potenza August 13, 2012 at 01:56 pm
You know, Stephanie. You're absolutely wrong. If we took away everything millionaire's and billionaire's have I mean ALL their income, that would still not save that train wreck known as medicare nor would it save medicaid. Obamacare will cost the poor dearly in lost jobs and oppourtinity. Employers will not hire the least skilled amongst us because the cost for their healthcare will be too large a percentage of their relative value as employees. The magic number is 50 employees when the requirements for Obamacare kick in. Essentially, this will lead to outsourcing because no company will want to go above that arbitrary number or labor costs will skyrocket. That is, unless you have a waiver granted by fiat from the President. Outsourcing is just another word for shipping jobs overseas. BTW healthcare and our deficit are two different things, but understand that you are just reiterating. On teh provider side, paying doctors less and less for their work will lead to a shortage of doctors, and the requirements of Community Rating and Guaranteed Issue, which will provide an incentive for people not to buy health insurance until they become sick (choosing instead to pay the fine) , will drive up the cost of insurance for those who chose to buy when they are still healthy.. Increased premiums and medical provider scarcity will lead to rationing of care for all of us. BTW the deficit and health care are separate issues, but yes, Obamacare will explode the deficit.
Glen K Dunbar August 13, 2012 at 02:37 pm
Paul. I like you so I will address this to You Sir/Pal. What is the ObamaCare. Why does it hurt the old. From where I sit the Govt already makes the old pay for everything on their own. Just look at my situation w/my Mom. This town and State are diliberately hanging me out to dry just so I can't enjoy my life and go to the opera.
What a town. What a state. Thankfully we have nice people like You. GLEN
Stephanie August 13, 2012 at 05:10 pm
I think you misunderstood, I'm saying that Paul Ryan wants to take away the health care of senior citizens and the poorest Americans by slashing medicare and medicaid (among other things). I am an Obama supporter.
Paul M Potenza August 13, 2012 at 06:04 pm
Stephanie. I think you misunderstood. I'm telling you what Obamacare will do to the old and the poor. It is in the over 2000 pages of regulations and comittees that you know little about. Ryan's plan will undoubtedly modify medicare for its future receipients, there is no choice because the system is not sustainable. It will not change for its current ones. Obamacare will increase the roles of medicaid recipients and leave it to the states to figure out how to swim in a mass of red ink. As far as ripping off the elderly, according to the CBO, Obamacare wiil cost $938 billion oer the next decade. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Obamacare will cut $575 billion from Medicare over the next ten years to help pay for the program. Who's taking care away from whom? Medicare advantage will also be eliminated, a program, that , while expensive, gives seniors the option of getting better care. I urge you, Glen, and Stephanie, to read all you can about Obamacare, your Congressmen and Women didn't before thy signed it into law by extraordinarily irregular means. There is no unending fountain of money for healthcare, and the only way to bring costs down is to open the system up to cmpetition between states, go after the massive fraud that is occuring now, and allowing people more instead of less choice. Allow the self employed to detuct their insurance costs from their taxes.
Frances August 13, 2012 at 07:53 pm
Paul the smoke and mirrors of Obamacareless is mind boggling and far too complex for the average person. That no one on Capitol read it before signing it should be a big red flag. Some of the goodies kicked in before the election, how convenient and the typical carrot, but the horrors of the 23 New Taxes and 20,000 IRS Agents will cripple not only business owners but every class in the nation. The costs of Obamacare will push an already fragile nation right over the cliff into BANKRUPTCY.
Frances August 13, 2012 at 08:02 pm
We have to start electing strong leaders and stop voting strictly be party. It's the person NOT the party. We had a the chance to elect a great in Foley but as usual the voteres voted Democrat. Malloy was a failure as Mayor DOUBLING Real Estate Taxes and seperating the sewer tax from the RE Taxes thus creating a whole NEW Tax. Obama got away with Blarney 4 years ago and see the state we're in...do you think the voters have wised up? Unemployment closer to 20%, debt ceiling $17 Trillion, China owns us and we're on the road to Bankruptcy. If you want to know about Romney google The Boston Globe December 5, 2002.
Frances August 13, 2012 at 08:19 pm
Paul Ryan is Fixing Medicare and Medicais. You must have heard over the years that they are unfunder and broken. Ryan is only changing medicare for those UNDER 54. The system as it is, will go bankrupt and the current WH doesn't want to do anything for fear of losing votes. My husband and I are on Medicare and I am deathly afraid of the current WH and their cuts to medicare. Obamacareless is cutting Medicare and payments to the Doctors. Why should Doctors bother with Medicare patients if they get paid next to nothing. The cost of Health Insurance has already increased by 10% and higher. Seniors will see less covered by Obamacare because it will be too costly to keep us alive. Obama wants big Government and TOTAL CONTROL and his Policies prove this.
Frances August 13, 2012 at 08:26 pm
Romney has a Sterling Business Record and Ryan is an Economics Genius. Romney saved Mass. turning a $635 MILLION Deficit into a $2 BILLION Surplus all with cutting Taxes 19 times. 2002 Olympics turned a $400 Million deficit into a $100 MILLION suplus. THE BOSTON GLOBE DECEMBER 5, 2002 and learn about this GREAT HUMBLE MAN that can and will save AMERICA.
Stephanie August 14, 2012 at 04:42 am
Paul, I understand that medicare is not sustainable. But privatizing medicare is not the answer. A good president should not be kicking senior citizens to the streets and force them to pay the high out of pocket costs for themselves. And the idea that the Affordable Care Act will cost $938 billion over the next 10 years is simply not true. The Affordable Care Act will save medicare about $500 billion over the next 10 years because of drug discounts for seniors in the "donut hole" coverage gap, cost-free preventive services, as well as the crack down on waste, fraud, and abuse in medicare (healthcare.gov). Since this is a market economy, the government has a duty to provide a safety net to its citizens. The fact is that this law insures 30 million more people by 2014. When more people have health insurance, more people will be able to have health care, which means less people in emergency rooms with small things like ear infections. Emergency room costs go down which means we pay less taxes for ER care. And since 30 million more people will be insured, health care costs will go down. Without the Affordable Care Act, we would have more people going bankrupt when they have to choose between paying for health care and paying for food. We would have another person die because they can't afford to have a life saving operation. Health insurance companies would drop people for getting sick. Paul, the list goes on.
Kendall L Owott August 14, 2012 at 05:29 am
As a moderate person, I agree that there is a need to improve the distribution of medical care to those American citizens who don’t currently get it. At the same time, the Obamacare approach suffers from 2 glaring flaws. First, nobody really understands it and second, Obama’s desire for a grand solution in a short period of time is doomed to be a screwed-up mess.
The prudent way to improve medical care is a series of mutually-agreeable compromises in steps we can understand and whose consequences we can reasonably forecast. The first thing we need is to get both sides of the aisle talking to each other and listening. Obama has not been able to pull that one off as well as Clinton did. On the other hand, he didn’t have Bob Dole in Congress, either. If we are to start with any group which needs help first, let’s help the vets who make it possible for us to enjoy the freedom of expression and ability to vote in Tuesday’s primaries. Then, let’s work together from a successful start so we can do what we can afford. Constrained capitalism is still the most successful economic model the world has seen. Let’s restart the engines. We need the jobs to sustain our middle class and defend ourselves.
Glen K Dunbar August 14, 2012 at 10:29 am
Thanks Pauly. You not only are the BEST Vet in the world...you also are very well informed. Where can I read a cut/dry version of what this really is.
Edward Michaels August 20, 2012 at 05:01 pm
Ryan's ideas are excellent. Anyone 55 or older will have Medicare just as they have it today. Younger folks will have a voucher plan. Both Romney and Ryan are intelligent and willing to work with Democrats. I'm tired of the Great Divide that Obama has brought to this country.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" if fallacious at best, disingenuous at worst.

Unknown to most parents, children’s data is being shared beyond the school district with sixRead More agencies inside the Utah Data Alliance and UTREX, according to Utah Technology Director John Brandt. The student data is further being “mashed” with federal databases, according to federal Education Dept. Chief of Staff Joanne Weiss: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/inside-school-research/2012/07/ed_urges_states_to_make_data_s.html While John Brandt assures us that only a handful of people in Utah have access to the personally identifiable data of children, recent alterations to federal FERPA (Famly Education Rights Privacy Act) regulations which were made by the U.S. Dept of Education, have radically redefined terms and widened the window of groups who can access private data without parental consent. For more on that, see the lawsuit against the U.S. Dept of Education on the subject: http://epic.org/apa/ferpa/default.html But first, an interjection: I want to introduce this article: http://seattleducation2010.wordpress.com/2013/01/02/your-students-privacy/ I like this article because it exposes the facts plainly, that parents are unaware that their children’s information is being shared without parental permission, beyond the school, beyond the district, and even beyond the state. It is verifiable and true. What it means: Courses taken, grades earned, every demographic piece of information, including family names and income, is being watched by the U.S. government via schools. Verify for yourself: The U.S. Dept. of Education’s own explanation is here, showing why SLDS systems exist: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/slds/factsheet.html
