I recently found out that it's a state law that gas stations must provide free air for tire inflation. No one I've mentioned this to knew this was the law. Yet we have a station in the middle of the village that has been taking advantage of (ripping off) his customers and fellow villagers' lack of knowledge for years.
To quote the DMV, "Connecticut gas stations are required to have air compressors and must supply free air. You do not to pay a fee to use the air compressor at the station according to Connecticut State Law Title 14 Sec. 14-325a." In our case, if you ask the attendant for the 50 cents, he will provide you with two tokens for the compressor -- nice trick, eh? The DMV suggests that " should you find a station is charging for air you must submit a detailed written report to: Department of Consumer Protection, Weights and Measures Devision, 165 Capiitol Avenue, Hartford, Ct. 06106.
It's not the occasional 50 cents that is upsetting, it's being taken advantage of all these years. I for one, will no longer purchase air, nor even a newspaper, and most certainly not what is often the most expensive gas in the village from here on out. Perhaps if others bring this to his attention, he will stop takening advantage of everyone.
