Quick Response by New Canaan Police Credited With Saving 14-Year-Old Runner in Cardiac Arrest

Youth collapses after race at Waveny.

A 14-year-old runner who collapsed at the end of a race at on Thursday evening is in stable condition, according to information supplied by the . 

Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said police were called to the park at 7:59 p.m. Officer Jason Kim was at the corner of South Ave. and Bank St., when the call came in and he was the first responder at the scene. When he arrived the youth had no pulse and was in cardiac arrest.

"Kim applied the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and the unit advised shock," Ogrinc said. "Officer Kim gave one shock and began CPR."

By 8:05 p.m., police dispatch were told the patient had a pulse and was breathing.

The patient, who is a Florida resident, had participated in a 3-mile relay race at the park. He was taken to Norwalk Hospital by ambulance, and was later transferred to the Westchster Medical Center, where he is in stable condition, Ogrinc said.
