150 Chicken Sandwiches, $1,000 Ordered

Credit Card and Chicken Sandwich Fraud

The owner of Club Sandwich on Cherry Street called police at 2:15 p.m. on Oct. 7 to report that a would-be customer had called-in an order for 150 chicken sandwiches.

Police say the owner became suspicious when the caller also asked that the store add $1,000 to the credit card charge, which he requested in cash. When the owner called MasterCard and was told the card was invalid, he called police. A return call to the number dialed revealed that the line had been disconnected.

98 Year-Old Driver Strikes Guardrail, Loses License

A Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 98 year-old Fairfield woman skidded over an embankment and became wedged atop a stonewall at Waveny in the Pool parking lot on at about 1 p.m. on Oct. 3, according to police. Officers on the scene reported that the woman, while uninjured appeared confused. Her license was taken and she was given a warning for failure to drive right.

Three Outstanding Warrants Result in Arrests

At 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3, Chris Corvese, 21, Wilton was stopped by State Police Troop F for speeding, according to the arrest report. New Canaan police were notified and he was returned here in connection with an outstanding warrant for third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny.

The warrant is in connection with an incident that occurred May 31 in the parking lot of the New Canaan YMCA when it was reported that a driver confronted a man who had entered his vehicle while he was in the Y. A chase ensued, and Corvese was subsequently named as the suspect in that case, according to Sgt. Peter Condos.

Corvese was held on $4,000 bond and scheduled to appear Oct. 4 at state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Joseph Anastasio, 34 of East Haven was arrested by East Haven Police following a car chase. According to police, he is a suspect in numerous burglaries, including one which occurred in New Canaan on June 9, for which New Canaan Police had issued a warrant for failure to appear.

New Canaan police said that on June 9 a resident reported confronting someone in her home who said he was working in the area and lost. At the time, the suspect fled the scene, but was subsequently arrested.

Greenwich police served a New Canaan warrant for first-degree failure to appear to Nicholas Merz, 19, of Greenwich. The warrant stemmed from a June 15 incident in New Canaan. Merz was stopped that day according to New Canaan police for a missing front license plate. Police reported that upon approaching the vehicle they detected the smell of marijuana. Further inspection, they say, yielded a clear plastic bag containing Adderall. At that time, Merz was arrested for failure to keep prescription drugs in their original container and for driving without a front plate. 

He had been assigned a June 29 court date, for which he reportedly did not appear.

Car Break-In at Waveny Park

A 66 year-old woman from East Hampton, NY called police when she returned to her car in Waveny Park after walking her dogs to find the window smashed and her purse containing $120 in cash, credit cards and her drivers license missing. She told police that the total value of the items taken, including artwork supplies was $500.

One-Car Accident

Police report they were called to West Road at 7 a.m. on Oct. 4 on a report that a 17-year-old woman lost control of her car and hit a utility pole. The teen was transported by New Canaan Ambulance to Norwalk Hospital suffering head and chest pain. She was issued an infraction summons for operating too fast for conditions—the roads were reported wet after a recent rain—and for failure to drive right.

DWI

At 7:45 p.m. on Oct. 7, officers at a White Oak Shade Road speed trap stopped a vehicle driven by Roger Hargrove, 50, of Nursery Road. Hargrove failed field sobriety tests after being stopped for speeding and was charged with driving under the influce. Hargrove was released on $260 bond and scheduled to appear Oct. 20 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Bicycle and Car Collide

At 9:30 a.m. on Oct. 8, police say a vehicle exiting Clearview Lane heading south on Ponus Ridge Road collided with a northbound bicyclist. New Canaan Ambulance arrived on the scene and transported the cyclist to Norwalk Hospital. The bicyclist was a 46 year-old Darien resident; the car was driven by a female resident of Clearview Lane.

Loud Music Results in Marijuana Discovery

Police arrived at a residence on Heather Drive at 11:45 p.m. on Oct. 10, following a report of loud music emanating from the home. After they knocked and were admitted into the house, the officers on the scene reported a strong odor of marijuana. According to Condos, a report said police found a clear plastic bag on the kitchen counter containing marijuana and another quantity in a plastic container. 

Clifton Conway, 23, of Norwalk, and Gregory MacIntyre, 21 of New Canaan, each were issued an infraction summons for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana.
