$155,000 Taken From Accounts, IRS Identity Theft and Teen's Wallet Missing

The following information was provided by the New Canaan Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Larceny

On Sept. 4, a 43-year-old resident of Father Peters Lane told police more than $155,000 in fraudulent charges were made against his credit cards and checking accounts since 2010. He was alerted to the problem when he received a letter from Norwalk Hospital on Aug. 16, 2011 about a $607 bill. He said he had not had any dealings with Norwalk Hospital and began to look into his financial records and discovered the fraudulent activity. A suspect has been identified, but no arrest has been made yet.

A 12-year-old girl left her wallet behind at a local ATM, and when she returned 20 minutes later the wallet was missing. The girl, a New Canaan resident, left the wallet at Citibank on Elm St., when she and her father were there to set up an account for her around 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 27. Police said the wallet was described as a child’s black wallet with neon embellishment. It contained $270 in cash.

Tax Return Identity Theft

 New Canaan police have taken over an identity theft investigation that began in 2004, when a New Canaan resident filed a 2003 income tax report for her 16-year-old child. The IRS informed the Shady Knoll Lane resident that a tax return with the child’s social security number had already been filed. After an IRS investigation, a suspect was identified. The woman reported the case to New Canaan police on Aug. 31, and they will submit a warrant for the suspect’s arrest.

Failure to Appear

On Aug. 31, Fairfield police arrested Maycon Passos, of Whitney Ave., Bridgeport on a New Canaan paperless warrant for 2nd degree failure to appear. Passos was arrested on May 21 in New Canaan for operating a motor vehicle under suspension and operating without a license. He failed to appear in court on July 25, 2011. Bond was set at $2,500.

Fraud

On Sept. 1, a 57-year-old White Birch Road resident reported to police that two of her credit cards had been used fraudulently. The woman discovered the charges on June 17 when looking over her credit card bill. At that time she discovered a charge for $25.44 at the Pier One store at Danbury Mall. There was a $2,648.94 charge on a second card for a laptop, charged at the Danbury Mall. When she checked, the woman discovered both of the credit cards were no longer in her possession.

Husted Lane Resident Reports Two Burglaries

A 59-year-old resident of Husted Lane reported two separate burglaries to police in the past week.

On the afternoon of Aug. 30, he reported to police that sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 someone entered his home forcibly. When he returned home he discovered a damaged lock and reported the following items missing:

  • 7 or 8 Oriental rugs
  • 20 cuff links
  • 12 shirts
  • suits
  • sport jackets
  • 12 Reidel wine glasses
  • 24 bars of Pears soap
  • 12 cases of wine (144 bottles) from a wine collection
  • 100 CDs
  • 30 DVDs
  • 30 VHS tapes and 100 cassettes

Police said no monetary value was given for these items.

On Sept. 1, the resident told police he had been away from the home from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. that day, and when returned to the premises he discovered 46 bottles of wine missing. He told police there were no signs of forced entry.

Larceny

 

On Sept. 5, a 34-year-old New Canaan resident told police his wallet was taken from a bag at the pool at Waveny Park. The incident occurred on Sept. 3, between 1:30-3 p.m., while he swam with his children. He left his wallet and other belongings near the pool and did not notice anyone suspicious. When he could not find the wallet he thought he had misplaced it. He was alerted by the American Express fraud department that someone had attempted to use his card at Old Navy and K-Mart stores in the Bronx. The wallet containd miscellaneous debit and credit cards as well as $60 cash.
