18-Year-Old Slapped with Pot, Paraphernalia Charges

An 18-year-old man was charged with possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia in New Canaan after a police officer pulled alongside a stopped car to see if the driver needed assistance, police said.

Police described the incident with this account (which amounts to an accusation not proven in a court):

At about 8:45 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, a police officer saw a car stopped on Sunset Hill Road. The officer stopped near the side of the car to see if the driver needed help or was lost, but noticed that the occupant became nervous.

The officer got out of his patrol car and spoke with the driver, an 18-year-old resident of Saint Nicholas Road in Darien. At that point, the officer smelled the odor of smoked marijuana coming from inside the car.

A search of the car turned up a plastic bag of what appeared to be marijuana under the driver's seat. Also in the car was well as a small glass jar with a little more, and a pack of Zig Zag cigar-wrap rolling paper. The marijuana amounted to less than half an ounce.
