Accident Report: Head-on Collision; Teenage Errors

New Canaan Police logged seven crashes in the past week, one resulting in injury.

Teen Rear-Ends Vehicle on Farm Road:

Around 7:30 a.m. May 10, a 17-year-old from New Canaan rear-ended a car that was stopped ahead of her that was waiting for a third vehicle to turn into the Waveny Care Center. Police cited the teenager for following to closely. The vehicle she struck, being driven by 66-year-old Norwalk woman, suffered minor damage.

Fuel Truck Backs into Oncoming Vehicle:


A 30-year-old driver making a delivery on Old Norwalk Road near Main Street said, despite his back-up camera, he didn't see anything when he started pulling out in reverse around 11 a.m. May 10. The 54-year-old New Canaan woman behind the truck blew her horn, but it was too late. Police gave the truck driver a verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Bright Sun Blamed in Head-On Crash:

Just after 3 p.m. May 10, a 41-year-old driver from New Canaan crashed into an oncoming car after she closed her eyes in bright sun while heading east on Jelliff Mill Road. She and her seven-year-old daughter were injured in the crash, as was a 54-year-old New Canaan man who was riding in the other vehicle. Both vehicles were severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene. The New Canaan woman faulted with the accident was issued an infraction for failure to drive right.

Student Backs into Passing Car in NCHS Lot:

A 17-year-old girl backing out of parking spot near the New Canaan High School tennis courts accidentally struck another vehicle heading out of the lot at 4:15 p.m. May 11, causing minor damage. No enforcement action was taken.

Clipped on Richmond Hill:

A 62-year-old New Canaan woman clipped the left front fender of another vehicle stopped at the intersection when she attempted to turn from Park Street onto Richmond Hill Road at 8:48 a.m. May 14. Police issued her a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Teen Starts Chain Reaction:

A 19-year-old New Canaan girl caused a chain reaction when she bumped into the vehicle stopped ahead of her for the light at the intersection of South Avenue and Bank Street. That vehicle, driven by an 86-year-old woman from New Canaan, in turn pushed into the vehicle ahead of it, being driven by a 41-year-old New Canaan woman. The teenager was given a written warning for following too closely.

Minor Tie-Up at South Avenue and Farm Road:

A driver took a turn from Farm Road too tight, striking a vehicle traveling north on South Avenue, and propelling it onto the sidewalk ramp at 4:31 p.m. May 14. Both vehicles drove away from the scene.
