Another Reminder of 'Stranger Danger'

Two incidents in Greenwich have prompted renewed concern.

School Superintendent David Abbey has circulated reports about "stranger danger" incidents in Greenwich this week to New Canaan parents. According to the reports submitted to Greenwich Police two students were approached by an older white male in a white van in separate occurrences within a 24-hour-period.

A 17-year-old student was walking home on the west end of town after getting off the bus on Tuesday, Jan. 12, when he was stopped by a man in a white van asking for directions. When the student told the man he wasn't familiar with the address, the man told the boy to get into the van. The student fled and did not see the van again.

On Wednesday morning, Jan. 13, the department recieved a very similar complaint from a 9-year-old student who was waiting for the bus in the North Street area when a man in a white van pullled up to ask him for directions and then told him to get into the van.

The 17-year-old described the man as a white male in his late forties, balding, with gray hair on the sides, and thick eye glasses. The 9-year-old gave a matching description.

Superintendent David Abbey said in his e-mail to parents that the information had been shared with the New Canaan Police Department and local school administrators.
