Another Year, Another Pre-Turkey Bowl Incident

Two Darien High School football players have been suspended from the team just before the Turkey Bowl, according to a newspaper report, after an incident of alleged teenage drinking where a fight broke out and a 17-year-old was sent to the hospital.

The Darien News website, in a report that cites unnamed sources for much of its information, reports that one source said a 17-year-old victim received "a concussion, a broken bone in his neck, facial lacerations, and had surgery Wednesday repair his broken nose."

Again citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said the suspended players were "one of the star receivers and a defensive lineman," and the suspensions were for alleged presence at a party where alcohol was served to minors.

In a news briefing on Monday and a news release issued Wednesday, Darien Police said a 17-year-old Darien boy had visited the Friday party at a home where numerous teenagers were drinking.

The boy was uninvited and was told to leave before the fight broke out. Police were called to the scene at 11:40 p.m., whereupon teenagers still at the party scattered into the nearby woods, leaving behind 57 beer cans and a beer pong setup.

Police found the victim sitting on a stone wall, the police news release said, with "multiple lacerations, a swollen lip and bloody nose. [...] The injuries were of a serious nature, and the victim was transported to Stamford Hospital."

Scott Waters, 18, of 5 Walmsley Rd., Darien, was arrested on a charge of second-degree assault and released on $500 bond. He is to appear Nov. 30 in state Superior Court in Stamford. Police released his arrest photo (attached to this article).

According to the Darien News article, Waters has played for the Darien High School team in the past, but this year he was listed on the roster of the Canterbury School.

A 17-year-old who lived in the home where the party was held was charged with providing alcohol to minors.

At the time of last year's Turkey Bowl football game between Darien and New Canaan, some Darien football players New Canaan High School.

Another recent, prominent incident of rowdyism related to Darien High School sports occurred in Stamford in March 2008, during a New Canaan-Darien hockey game in which a fight broke out between a number of fans.
