Boyfriend of Darien Visitor Escapes CO Theater Shooting

Jade Tittman of Littleton, CO got a 3:30 a.m. call while she was visiting her grandmother: Her boyfriend told her he was at the Aurora, CO moviehouse where the massacre took place and a friend of his was shot.

Jade Tittman, 18, was up in the wee hours this morning with a friend during a visit to Darien when she started reading Twitter messages about the shooting at an Aurora, CO movie theatre, not far from her home in Littleton.

[According to an article on the New York Times website, the death toll in the shooting is 12, with dozens injured.]

Then, at about 3:30 a.m., she got a call from her boyfriend, also 18. He told her was there in the back of the theater when the gunman, dressed all in black, walked through an Exit door at the front and started firing.

Her boyfriend told her he was able to get out, but a friend of his had been shot and was being treated in a hospital.

At first, her boyfriend told her, he thought the gunman was doing something promotional as part of the premier midnight showing of the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," that the crowd was there to see.

"He said that he [the gunman] first shot up in the air, and then he shot all around—he didn't have a particular target," Tittman said. "He [her boyfriend] was really scared. He was really shocked that it was actually happening, and he didn't know if he was going to get out without being shot at."

Tittman said she herself had never been to that movie theater, only to the shopping mall it's attached to, about 15 miles from her home.

"It's really scary to me, because I was looking to move to near there," she said. "This, obviously, is changing my mind. It's getting a little crazy."

Tittman has been staying with her grandmother during her visit, and her mother previously lived in New Canaan. She expects to be returning to Denver early next week.

"It's really sad that you have to worry about going to movies—be worried about what's going to happen," she said.

Esprit de Corps, the quote you are referring to was in reference to the government telling you what MEDICAL services you can or can not have. That is quite a bit different than the police department failing to protect and serve. Even my nine year old gets that one.

Tom, when you call the police and ask them to do something, 2 things will happen. First, they may do what you ask. Second, they may not. You can’t predict what they will do. Ever. There was a woman whose 4 year old got loose and a neighbor called the police because she believed the child was in danger. The police arrested the mother. The neighbor apparently didn’t know or want t the police to arrest the mother, but they did. So, don’t be surprised when the police don’t do something you ask or do something you don’t want. That is just the way it is. If you have a complaint, write First Selectman Rob Mallozzi or Police Commission Chairman Jim Cole. You can also file an official complaint at the police station or talk to the police chief. If these avenues seem risky to you, you can always state your opinions in this forum. Rob and Jim are an elected official and a political appointee and both have volunteered lots of their own time and are interested in what the public thinks. The Colorado Movie Massacre has made a lot of people nervous and it wouldn’t hurt if the police helped people like you less agitated. This was a PR opportunity which was poorly handled by the front desk. BTW, I can’t find anything in the Town Code relating to the type of nonprofit door-to-door activity you describe. Maybe Town Council should establish hours if they have not already. Good luck.

You "notified the police department" because someone "rang the doorbell"?!?!? What did you do after that, change your Depends?

On topic. What a terrible tragedy. I feel for all those lost and their Family. I pray those who survived that they will be OK. As for the off topic. You all know my stance. If someone tells me I have to turn left I am going to turn right. I someone tells me I can NOT jump up and down..guess what I AM going to jump up and down in protest. Tom. the Police are the LAST people I would ever call unless I am forced to. What I would have done is slam the door in their face and tell them You do not conduct business outside of business hours. Tell him/her You are allergic to ANY kind of OT GLEN
