Cops: New Canaan Husband Hits Wife, Wife Tries to Hit Husband—with Car

New Canaan police arrested both a husband and wife last week after a dispute reportedly turned physical when the husband attacked his wife and culminated with the wife trying to run over her husband with a car, authorities said this week.

According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, police responded to a dispute at 28 Raymond Street on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8:58 a.m. Upon officer arrival, the husband and wife, identified as Michael Andrew Jenkins, 47, and Cheryl Ann Jenkins, 52, were still engaged in a verbal argument, Ogrinc said.

Interviews with the husband and a neighbor who witnessed the event revealed Cheryl had allegedly attempted to strike her husband, twice, with a Tesla vehicle after he left the house and began traveling on foot down Raymond Street. Michael allegedly had to jump out of the way both times to avoid being struck, Ogrinc said.

At that time, Cheryl was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct before being taken to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation. She then posted a $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Friday, Dec. 13.

During the investigation, officers reportedly attempted to get Cheryl to explain her side of the story but she remained uncooperative, stating only that her husband had hit her but refusing to elaborate, Ogrinc said.

However, after her appearance in court, Cheryl returned to the police department on Dec. 14 and filed a report against Michael, stating that during the verbal argument and prior to the alleged incident with the vehicle, he had struck her in the chest area, knocking her to the floor, and then struck her multiple times in the left side of her head and ear, then continued punching and kicking her, Ogrinc said, who said Cheryl had injuries consistent with her claims.

Officers went and spoke with Michael, then took him into custody and charged him with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct. He posted a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Monday, Dec. 16.
