Credit Card Fraud, Disturbances at Dunkin' Donuts and the Library, Sundries Stolen From CVS [Update]

The following information supplied by the New Canaan Police Department. Arrests do not necessarily indicate convictions.

Credit Card Fraud

On July 6, a 40-year-old Silvermine Road resident told New Canaan police that somebody had opened a major credit card account in his name. The man became aware of the account, which was opened in March 2011, when he received collection notices looking for payment of the $1,800 balance.

On July 6, Suzanne Antao, of Stratford, CT, turned herself in at New Canaan police headquarters on a warrant for failure to appear in court. Antao, 41, was arrested on March 2 for operating under suspension, failure to return a license and speeding. When she missed a March 2 court date, a warrant was issued for her arrest. In addition to the original charges, Antao was charged with second degree failure to appear in court. She posted $2,500 bond and has a court date of July 19.

Sundries Taken From CVS

On the afternoon of July 6, an employee from CVS Pharmacy at 94 Park St, called police to report she had seen a man placing items in his pocket. When officers arrived, Paul S. Northrop, 30, of Danbury, was still on the premises. He had two deodorants in his pockets, as well as items in his car that he had taken from the store earlier in the day. Northrop was charged with sixth degree larceny and sixth degree criminal attempt at larceny for the two deodorants as well as dental floss, mouth wash and shampoo that was in the car. The total value of the items is $21.73. Northrop posted $250 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 18.

Laptop Taken From Car

On the early evening of July 7, a 50-year-old Vermont resident reported to police that items were taken from her parked car. She left her car at the Park St. municipal lot at approximately 4:15 p.m. When she returned to it at 5:30, a black canvas bag that was on the back seat was missing. The bag contained a Gateway laptop computer and charger, valued at $150, two small picture frames, valued at $10 and a notebook valued at $1. The woman told police she had left the windows open about one-quarter of the way, and was not sure if the car had been locked. There were no signs of forced entry.

Warrants for Arrests in 2009 and 2010 [Update]

Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of New Canaan Police Department has provided additional information about the case of Kenneth L. Hill who was arrested on two separate warrants on the evening of July 7. Hill, 45 of Stamford, turned himself in at New Canaan police headquarters on charges relating to two earlier arrests.

The first incident took place on Oct. 22, 2009, when Hill, who was intoxicated, was arrested for creating a public disturbance at Dunkin’ Donuts on Elm St. On March 17, 2010, Hill was charged with third degree criminal mischief after he urinated on a computer in the New Canaan Library. Police said Hill was intoxicated at the time. Hill posted bond and was given a court date of March 29.

On August 7, 2010, Hill was arrested on two paperless warrants for second degree failure to appear and was assigned a court date of Aug. 23. Ogrinc said he subsequently missed a court date on Jan. 10, 2011.

On July 7, 2011 Hill turned himself in after learning that two warrants had been filed for his arrest. He posted $5,000 bond for the March 2010 arrest, and $2,500 for the October 2009 arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 19.

Credit Card Fraud

On July 8 an Oak St. resident told police five unauthorized charges had been made on her credit card. The 49-year-old woman said the charges were all from stores in Italy. The charges, which total $569.88, ranged from $536 to $2.90.

Family Dispute

At 8:12 p.m. on July 10, police were called to a residence on Thrush Lane to respond to a dispute between a brother and sister. Another sibling called police after the two got into a heated argument that led to grabbing and pushing. Michael A. Esposito, 19, was charged with disorderly conduct and was scheduled to appear in court on July 11. No one was injured in the incident.

DWI

At 8:33 p.m. on July 10, a passerby reported to police that he had seen two men who appeared to be “very intoxicated” getting out of a vehicle near the Mobil station at 16 South Ave. The caller told police he was worried the driver might get back in the vehicle and drive in his intoxicated state. When an officer arrived he saw two men who did appear to be intoxicated. Keys were in the ignition of their vehicle, but the car was not running. The driver, Nicholas F. Manna, 53, of Burlington, CT, was arrested for driving under the influence. According to police, his passenger, Paul V. Novakovic, 44 of Seymour, CT, was "agitated and loud" and was charged with creating a public disturbance.
