Drug Possession Charges for Darien Man After Two Accidents in One Day

After hitting one car and, soon after, crashing into a tree, John T. Keegan was found with enough drugs, police said, that they charged him with intent to sell them.

After causing one accident last May, leaving the scene and crashing his car into a tree, a Darien man was found with enough drugs and drug paraphernalia in his car that police arrested him on charges of preparing to sell it, Darien police said.

On Wednesday, John Keegan, 22, of Berry Lane, turned himself in after police told him they had a warrant for his arrest.

With minor editorial changes, here is a news release about the case issued Thursday by the Police Department (consisting of  accusations not proven in court):

On May 17, 2014 John Tyler Keegan, 22, of Berry Lane, Darien, was involved in a minor motor vehicle accident on the Post Road near Weed’s Landing.  Keegan never stopped his vehicle and left the scene of the accident.  An officer nearby was given the description of Keegan’s vehicle and observed it traveling east on the Post Rd.

The officer activated his emergency lights and attempted to pull Keegan over however Keegan’s vehicle increased speed and abruptly turned off on a side street.  The officer continued to try to catch up to Keegan’s vehicle and discovered that it had now been involved in a second collision.

Keegan’s vehicle had crossed over into the oncoming traffic lane on Goodwives River Rd, left the travel portion of the roadway and subsequently struck a fence and a tree.

The vehicle sustained heavy damage and was now disabled.  Keegan was then taken into custody and arrested for various motor vehicle charges.

Keegan would later admit, “I hate cops” and that he was trying to get away from the officer when he lost control of his vehicle.

During the inventory of Keegan’s vehicle, officers located various quantities of narcotics and items associated with the sale of narcotics.

Due to the circumstances, the vehicle was seized and a search warrant was later executed.  In all, small quantities of marijuana and hash oil were recovered as well as various items to manufacture, smoke, and vaporize these substances.

Forty Xanax and Clonazepam pills were also located in a “false” iPod designed to conceal narcotics.  These items were seized as evidence and a warrant was then secured for Keegan’s arrest.

After learning this agency held an active arrest warrant, Keegan turned himself in to the Darien Police Department on July 2, 2014.  Keegan was charged with the following:

  • Illegal possession of prescription narcotics
  • Possession of narcotics with intent to sell
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Keegan posted a $5,000.00 court set bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on July 14, 2014.

Editor's note:

According to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website, Keegan was charged with failure to drive in the proper lane (an infraction) by Connecticut State Police (Troop G — headquartered in Bridgeport) on May 12, five days before the Darien incident. He faces those charges in state Superior Court in Norwalk. His lawyer there is Mark Sherman of Stamford.

Darien police trafic-related charges against Keegan for the May 17 incidents are evading responsibility, disobeying the signal of a police officer, traveling unreasonably fast and making an improper turn. He faces those charges in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Aside from changes to accord with Patch editorial style, the omission of Keegan's exact address and the chapter citations of state law were the changes made to this news release. Darien police news releases and other information can often be found on the
Police Department's website and Facebook page (although not this one, at least not yet).
