Darien Cops Increase School Patrols [UPDATE]

Security has been "reinforced" at all Darien public school buildings in response to the shooting Friday morning in Newtown.

Update 2:24 p.m.:

Superintendent Stephen Falcone sent the following news release:

In light of the tragic shootings at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connnecticut we have acted quickly to ensure the safety of all children in our schools.

1. We have been in contact with the Darien Police Department and they have heightened their vigilance around school grounds.
2. We have reinforced our security system in and around our school buildings.
3. Doors have been checked to ensure that all are fully locked.

4. We continue to provide an emotionally safe environment for our students.

We are addressing this issue with great care and concern.  The safety of students and those who work in the schools are our highest priority.  Our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors in Newtown and all those impacted by this tragedy.

Darien Police spokesman Jeremiah Marron issued the following news release at 1:47 p.m.:

In lieu of today’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT the Darien Police have increased patrols and presence at all schools in Darien.  We have been in close contact with the Darien Superintendent of Schools, Stephen Falcone, who has ensured us that security has been reinforced at all school buildings, and that a safe environment is being maintained. 

The School Resource Officer at Darien High School is aware of the incident and is working closely with school officials. 

We ask citizens to report all suspicious activity by dialing 911.
