Exterminator Charged in New Canaan Scam Arrested Again

Greenwich police charge exterminator in case of switching expensive diamond with 'a lesser quality" stone in client's home.

An exterminator who was was arrested again on Wednesday — but this time by Greenwich police. He is accused of switching an expensive diamond from the ring of a Greenwich client with a stone of lesser quality.

George Lawrence, 41, who gave an address of 156 Wake St., Bridgeport, surrendered May 15 to police who obtained an arrest warrant charging him with first-degree larceny in connection with the Dec. 29, 2010 incident. Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said, "He switches diamonds with a lesser quality diamond with the intent to mislead the owner it is the same ring."

The bait and switch apparently didn't fool the resident of a Thunder Mountain Road home who noticed that the diamond from a ring had been changed. Lawrence was described by police as an employee of Guaranty Pest Elimination who was completing work at the home. The missing stone was valued "in excess of $10,000 and has not been recovered, Gray said.

Lawrence posted $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear May 22 in state Superior Court in Stamford.

Lawrence in November 2011 following a complaint that a 2.1 carat diamond was replaced with a fake in a home where Lawrence worked as an exterminator. Stamford Police investigated a similar incident and worked with Darien cops which lead to the Darien charge.

The disposition of the cases in Darien and New Canaan were not immediately available Wednesday.

None of the diamonds have been recovered.

I just called Staples. This is really disturbing to me. If I don't get a satisfactory answer, IRead More will let people know and I will also decide whether to continue shopping there. I do not like to give my money to unethical businesses.

This has convinced my growing conviction that Patch has moved completely away from any pretense ofRead More being a news source and is simply an electronic bulletin board. By abandoning their prior procedure of approving posts before they go up, they are letting anything go on and then taking them down if they're reported. By then, it's too late: the poster has gotten their message across during the time it's in the lineup. I only check in with Patch occasionally now and so many people in town won't read it at all anymore. I think we need to be honest with ourselves about what kind of a public forum this venue is. This doesn't reflect well on Staples if they are using subterfuge and violating Terms of Use on Patch either.

New Canaan hockey players are better off playing at Sono, Ridgefield or Stamford Youth Hockey.
