Fire Log: Boy's Hand Freed; Oil Tank Springs Leak

Firefighters also cleaned up after three minor accidents this week.

Boy's Hand Stuck in Door Handle:

Members of New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 and the Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to a report that a boy's hand was stuck in a door handle at East School Thursday, Nov. 5. The call came in at 3:41 p.m. after a custodian removed the device from the door but was unable to free the boy's hand. Firefighters slowly cut the hardware off the boy's arm. Emergency responders were on the scene for 45 minutes.

There's a Hole in the Oil Tank:

When an oil tank at a house on Spring Water Lane got an infusion of 275 gallons on the morning of Wednesday, Nov. 11, about five gallons wound up on the floor. An oil company plugged the pencil-sized hole with his fingers while the homeowner owner called the firehouse. Firefighters contained the spill and stayed at the house until the oil company's clean-up team arrived.


Appliance Fire Proves Minor:

Six Fire Department vehicles responded to a call at 7:43 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, about an appliance fire at a house on Pocconock Trail, worried it could be a structure fire. Three  crews were called off en route as the incident proved minor.


Firefighters Clean Up after Accidents:

New Canaan Fire Company No. responded to an accident shortly after midnight on Saturday, Nov. 7, to clean up fluids spilled by the crash near the intersection of Valley Road and Huckleberry Hill Road.

Firefighters responded to another accident on the Merritt Parkway near exit 38 southbound about eight hours later, but were called off as Norwalk Firefighters handled the scene.

New Canaan firefighters cleaned up fluids spilled in a two-car accident around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at the intersection of Farm Road and South Avenue that involved minor injuries.


Furnace Backfires:

An occupant of a house on Journey's End Road reported just before 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, that a fire had been put out following a bang from the furnace. The occupant also shutoff the breaker to the furnace before firefighters arrived.


False Alarms—6:

New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to four false alarms this week, including one at the Waveny Care Center Friday night when the sprinklers were activated. The alarm at the Walgreen shopping center at 36 Pine St went off twice, and firefighters advised the manager to have the system fixed.

Burnt food set off the alarm at Lapham Community Center on Monday morning. A piece of toast set off the alarm at a house on Deep Valley Road Thursday evening.

Three carbon monoxide alarms also proved unfounded this week.
