Fire Log: Car Accidents and Minor Incidents

The most significant incident in this week's fire log was the collision between a motorcycle and an SUV Sunday.

The Fire Department received calls regarding four traffic accidents this week, including Sunday's collision between a motorcycle and an SUV that left the motorcyclist with severe head and internal injuries. Firefighters also responded to a number of minor incidents involving power lines, a gas leak, a carbon monoxide alarm, and smoke.

New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported one person to Norwalk Hospital on Friday, Sept. 11, after a car drove into a telephone pole near 806 Carter St around 8:53 p.m. Connecticut Light & Power and AT&T were notified as the pole, which was topped by a transformer, was compromised. State Police cancelled a call to the Fire Department regarding an accident on the Merritt Parkway near exit 38 northbound at 3:41 p.m. Friday afternoon; a patient in that incident refused medical care. The Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle driving into a tree near Waveny Park at 9:39 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 15; there were no injuries there.

At 6:59 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, firefighters responded to a report of power lines on fire near the Merritt Apartments at 162 Park St; the fire burned itself out and Connecticut Light & Power was notified. They tended to a gas leak at 9:58 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, possibly emanating from a rarely used stove in an out building on a property at 135 Comstock Hill Rd; firefighters shut off the gas and advised the owners to call for service. Firefighters ventilated a house on 22 Hunters Creek Lane where a carbon monoxide alarm went off shortly before 4 p.m. on Wednesday Sept. 9. And they responded to a report of a possible structure fire at 106 Comstock Hill Ave at 6:36 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, which proved to be a minor case involving smoke in the basement.

There were seven false alarms in the log this week, including one at the Police Department on Sunday where staff activated the alarm in error, and a report of smoke in the area of the New Canaan Playhouse on Tuesday which turned out to be from a wood-burning oven at a nearby pizza restaurant.
