Fire Log: Fires Out, Accidents Cleaned Up

Firefighters took out their hoses Friday to snuff out separate car and dumpster fires.

SUV Destroyed by Flames: An SUV in the driveway was already fully engulfed in flames when two fire engines arrived at 38 Nursery Rd at about 2:45 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. Firefighter put out the blaze in less than 10 minutes and then requested that the Police Department send a wrecker.

Dumpster Fire Knocked Down: Firefighters extinguished a 40-yard dumpster that caught fire around midnight on Friday, Oct. 9. The firefighters were on the scene at 482 Trinity Pass Rd, where a home is under construction, for just under an hour. A false alarm sounded at the house four days later when an alarm tech forgot to put the system into test mode before sending out a manual signal.

Broken Steam Pipe Causes Scare: A homeowner at 136 Mariomi Rd thought there was a fire in the basement when a steam pipe burst just before 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. The burst of steam had set off the fire alarm, but there was no fire. Firefighters shutdown the furnace.

Firefighters Clean Up After Accidents: New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a single-car accident on Lambert Road involving a solo driver around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, and then stayed on the scene to await the wrecker. Firefighters applied a drying agent to the road to sop up fluids spilled by a two-car crash on the Merritt Parkway between exits 36 and 37 northbound shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11.

Howling Wind Brings, Smoke, Fire, False Alarms: After the fire log was posted last Wednesday, Oct. 7, even more wind-related calls came into the Fire Department. A pole fire was reported near the intersection of West Road and Hemlock Hill Road at 8:33 p.m. A resident at 883 Valley Road reported an electrical smell after a voltage overage at 6:36 p.m. A pair of false alarms at New Canaan Country School were caused by a power outage and then a power surge at New Canaan Country School on the blustery day.

Firefighters Respond to Calls for Public Assistance: Firefighters helped a resident of Millport Avenue shutdown their furnace and hot water heater that were malfunctioning around 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.  On Tuesday, Oct. 13, a crew went to the Canaan Parish Apartments on a public assistance call just after 9 a.m. Firefighters shutdown the heating system and ventilated a house at 41 Church St after the boiler misfired around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

False Alarm Count — 9: The Fire Department responded to nine false alarms since the log was last posted, including a couple of alarms caused by a power outage and then a power surge at New Canaan Country School while the wind was howling Wednesday, Oct. 7. An alarm sounding at Joseph A. Bank on Thursday, Oct. 8, also proved unfounded.
