Fire Log: Highway Accident, Elevator Rescue, Wind

After a serious accident on the Merritt Sunday, wind downing trees and power lines kept the lights and sirens going Wednesday.

One Person Injured in Rt 15 Accident: A car drove into a tree near Exit 36 on the Merritt Parkway southbound around 1 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, shutting down the highway. Firefighters responded and stayed on the scene to help clear the roadway and await the wrecker after one patient was transported to Norwalk Hospital.

Woman Rescued from Elevator: Firefighters helped free a woman who got stuck in an elevator when the power went out at Oenoke Lane Corporation at 145 Oenoke Ln. around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Wind Downs Trees, Starts Fires: A blustery day Wednesday, knocked down a tree near 720 Weed St resulting in a transformer fire shortly after noon. A tree fell against a power line near the intersection of Smith Ridge Road and Wydendown Road around 5:20 p.m. catching fire; the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived. In both instances, Connecticut Light and Power crews were called in.

Firefighters Assist Seizing Woman: At 9:07 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, the Fire Department was called to 68 Old Stamford Rd. where a man was reporting that his wife had been suffering from seizures since 11 p.m. the previous night and that her breathing was labored and she was not responsive. EMS was dispatched.

Fuel Leak Contained: Firefighters dealt with a gasoline leak in the garage of a house at 650 Laurel Rd Tuesday, Oct. 6 shortly after 11 a.m.

House Ventilated After CO Alarm: Two occupants of a house at 134 Millport Ave reported feeling fine despite elevated carbon monoxide levels around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Firefighters used a fan to ventilate the house.

Heating System Smokes: A resident of a house at 86 White Oak Shade Rd called to report smoke after turning on the heat around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30. Firefighters advised the resident to go outside and call for maintenance.

Seven False Alarms:
New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to seven false alarms this week, including calls from New Canaan High School's Dunning Stadium, Silvermine Guild Arts Center where the alarm company was working on the system, and a smoke detector that went off in the first floor locker room of New Canaan Mounted Troop's new building for no apparent reason. Incense burning at 99 Weed St on Saturday, Oct. 3, set off the alarm there around 8:43 a.m.
