Fire Log: Lamp Shorts at Irwin; Elevator Rescue

For the second week in a row, firefighters dealt with a structure fire.

Shorting Porch Lamp Ignites at Irwin:

Firefighters were able to quickly contain a fire that started under the portico of the main building at Irwin Park around 6 p.m. Friday, April 23. It took them about 20 minutes to open up the ceiling and be sure the fire was completely out.

In addition to toasting the portico, flaming debris charred the front door, but the building, which houses New Canaan's land use departments, was back in business Monday.

Fire Chief Ed Karl said the short was not the result of the usage of the building, built as a residential dwelling in 1963, or any problems with the electrical system.

Mother and Child Rescued from Elevator:

A mother and her young son got stuck when an elevator had a mechanical malfunction between floors at the Congregation Church and nursery school shortly before noon Tuesday, April 27. Firefighters were able to open up the doors and let them out.

False Alarms Answered—6:

A power surge set off the fire alarm at the New Canaan Country School's middle school building at 6:02 a.m. Friday, April 30. Workers accidentally set off the alarm at East School shortly before the opening bell Wednesday, April 29.

Four more fire and carbon monoxide alarms in the past week were set off accidentally or proved unfounded.
