Fire Log: Lots of False Alarms

By our count, out of 24 reports, at least 14 involved ringing alarms and no fire.

Traffic accidents, cooking fires and lots of false alarms kept New Canaan firefighters busy last week. Here's the log of their activity:

Sunday, August 2:

  • At 9:21 a.m. New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a report from a man whose mother had fallen while trying to get out of bed and was complaining of back pain. EMS was dispatched to a Summer Street address.
  • On Sunday, the crew also responded to a fire alarm set off by a barbeque grill on Wahackme Lane, a report of smoke at a home on Ponus Ridge Rd., and a suspected lightning strike at on South Ave.
  • The fire department also got calls for four false alarms.

Saturday, August 1:

  • At 9:47 p.m., New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a traffic accident. A car had crashed into a stone wall near the intersection of Oenoke Ridge Road and Oenoke Lane.
  • At 1:17 p.m., the J. Crew store at 24 Elm St. called to report that the store's fire alarm was sounding.

Friday, July 31:

  • At 3:56 p.m. a power surge activated the fire pumps at New Canaan Country School at 545 Ponus Ridge Rd. The alarm was reset.
  • The fire department received false alarm calls to a Reeder Lane and a Weed Road address where the alarm was to be disarmed during ongoing construction.

Thursday, July 30:

  • New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a motor vehicle accident at 2:29 p.m. involving a car and a van at 293 Jeliff Mill Rd. Two people were transported to the hospital.
  • Construction workers at the Congregational Church and Nursery School at 23 Park St. set off the fire alarm; a faulty detector at New Canaan High School at 11 Farm Road set off the alarm there; and the fire department received another false alarm call from a Chichester Road address.

Wednesday, July 29:

  • New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 received a call from the Waveny Care Center at 3 Farm Rd. due to a faulty detector in the café.
  • A fire alarm at a Gower Road address was set off by smoke from cooking.
  • The fire department received false alarm calls from homes at on Dans Highway and Tobys Lane. 

Tuesday, July 28:

  • New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a report of sparking wires at an office building on South Avenue near Oak Street at 5:04 p.m. The sparking was caused by an electrical wire that had melted. Connecticut Light & Power was notified.
  • The fire department got a false alarm call from a Running Brook Lane residence.

Monday, July 27:

  • New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a traffic accident caused when a truck and a car tried to pass under the bridge on Old Stamford Road at the same time. No injuries were reported.
