Fire Log: Minor Accidents, Shower Steam, Puppy

In addition to responding to three accidents and a slew of false alarms, fire crews also rescued a puppy this week.

Firefighters responded to four traffic accidents, and two car fires this week. But they also spent 45 minutes on Sunday evening rescuing a puppy from a storm drain.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, around 5:15 p.m., the fire department responded to a traffic accident at Park Street and Pine Street, near the post office, with a report of a head injury. On Friday morning around 10 a.m., fire crews helped clean up fluids on the street after another traffic accident at 230 Smith Ridge Rd. An hour and a half later, they responded to a call of a car fire on Pine Street at First County Bank. Another car fire was reported on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 11:08 a.m. at 26 Danvers Lane. A Fire Department crew disconnected the vehicle's battery. Later that day, at 1:35 p.m., the fire department got a report of a bicyclist struck by a vehicle. Two ambulances were called after the driver suffered an anxiety attack, but the fire call was cancelled.

Saturday evening, at 6:35 p.m., a fire crew extinguished a brush fire in a field at 146 Canoe Hill Rd.

Two hours later, at 5:15 p.m., a fire crew responded to a call of an elevator problem at the Waveny Care Center, 3 Farm Rd. The crew notified the building's maintenance crew.

The department also received 13 alarms that turned out to be false, including a report that someone was stuck in an elevator at School House Apartments and Day Care at 156 South Ave. When firefighters arrived they found no one in the elevator. In four other instances, fire crews concluded that steam had set off a nearby alarm. There was also a false alarm on Tuesday at the New Canaan Library.
