Fire Log: One Big Gasoline Mess, A Dozen Minor Calls

Mobil Station's problem continues to plague neighborhood.

More Gasoline Along White Birch Road:

Around 8 a.m. Monday, March 1, firefighters responded to White Birch Road where residents were again complaining about a strong smell of gasoline and a film visible on the nearby brook. The pollution is emanating from the Mobil Station near exit 37 on the Merritt Parkway, which is on state-owned land. The Fire Marshal contacted the state Department of Environmental Protection. The DEP has been monitoring the problem since the early 1990s and is expecting a remediation action plan from Exxon Mobil soon according to a report by the Stamford Advocate published in December.

Around 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, a crew went to help get the sump pump working in the basement of a house on East Cross Road where about a foot of water was blocking the rear access door.

Other Minor Incidents:

When firefighters metered a house on Willowbrook Lane where the carbon monoxide alarm went off Tuesday, March 2, they found no sign of elevated CO levels.

The smelly dregs of a propane tank at 70 Main St prompted an odor investigation at 70 Main Street Saturday, Feb. 27.

False Alarms—7:

The Fire Department responded to ... calls over the past week later labeled as false alarms, including one at Sallea Antiques where painting fumes set off the alarm Wednesday, March 3. The alarm again went off at the Congregational Church & Nusery School Sunday, Feb. 28, just before 10 a.m., this time due to burnt popcorn. Smoke from cooking was also a factor in another three of the false alarms.
