Fire Log: Post-Storm Brush Fires, Wires Down

Two weeks after the big nor'easter, a loose branch and some yard cleaning prompt calls the Fire Department.

Brush Fires Extinguished:

A caller reported a brush fire near the Silvermine Guild Arts Center at 4:46 p.m. Wednesday, March 24. The caller witnessed someone pouring water on the flames, which were out by the time firefighters arrived.

Burning brush was reported on Valley Road near Valley Lane at 5:16 p.m. Sunday, March 21.

Downed Wires Secured:

A resident of Hanford Lane called just before 7 p.m. Friday, March 26, to report that a tree had fallen and pulled the power line from the house. Firefighters shutoff the main breaker, taped off the area, and notified CL&P.

False Alarms Answered—16:

Firefighters responded to 16 false alarms last week including one at St. Aloysius shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, March 26, while a funeral was in progress—firefighters thought that alarm might have been set off by candles lit for the memorial, but it turned out a maintenance worked had tripped the alarm while changing a lightbulb.

Someone at the Lapham Community Center mistook the pull station for a light switch and accidentally set off the alarm there around noon Monday, March 22. A malfunctioning alarm at Waveny Care Center went off three times Sunday, March 21.

Firefighters found no elevated carbon monoxide levels when they metered a house on Gower Road where the CO alarm sounded Saturday, March 20.

After responding to a report of a transformer fire on Silvermine Road at 1:37 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, firefighters found nothing.
