Fire Log: Small Fires; Too Much CO

Shower steam, fireplace smoke, and poor cooking again prompted false alarms.

Firefighters Extinguish Illegal Burn:

The New Canaan Fire Department received a report of a possible brush fire on Valley Road just before 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15. Crews responding to the area put out an illegal burn.

CO Levels Elevated at Recently Sold House:

The carbon monoxide alarm went off at a house on Welles Lane shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12. Firefighters spent about half an hour on the scene, ventilating the house after they metered CO levels at more than 100 parts per million.

Small Fire at House Under Construction:

On Saturday, Jan. 9, at 5:42 p.m. firefighters were dispatched to a house on Oenoke Ridge Road to investigate a small fire.

Firefighters also tended to a furnace problem at Riverview Commons on Summer Street around 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11 and investigated a concerning odor at a house on Woodridge Circle around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 14.

False Alarms—7:

Six calls to the fire department this week were later labeled as false alarms, including an alarm set off by cooking at the New Canaan Group Home on South Avenue, and a power failure that activated the carbon monoxide at a house on Salem Road, both on Friday, Jan. 8.

Another carbon dioxide alarm called directly into department headquarters also proved unfounded as firefighters responding to the house on Douglas Road Saturday, Jan.9, metered CO levels at zero.
