Fire Log: Smoke, But No Fire

Firefighters found no fires this week as they responded to reports of smoke and other false alarms.

There was smoke but no fire as New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 investigated three reports of smoke this week. The Fire Department also responded to seven false alarms.

Bystanders standing near Park and Elm Streets on Tuesday morning,  Sept. 8, noticed smoke in the air. When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered that wind had carried smoke from a pizza oven across town.

On Sunday, Sep. 6, around noon, firemen were called to 277 Old Stamford Rd. Smoke there proved to be caused by cooking and the situation was quickly diffused.

Firemen were also called to 11 Greystone, at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, to investigate heavy chimney smoke caused by a delayed oil burner ignition. The house was ventilated and elevated carbon monoxide levels discovered were brought down to zero.

On Friday, Sep. 4, a fire alarm at St. Aloysius Church was quickly labeled a malfunction. Half a dozen other false alarms were called in this week from homes on Betsy's Lane, Smith Ridge Road, Silvermine Rd, Evergreen Road and Old Norwalk Road.
