Fire Log: Smokey, Firery, and Wet Holidays

Firefighters responded to more than two dozen calls between Christmas and New Year's

Vacant House Flooded:

Firefighters responded to a report of a water problem at a 6,000-square-foot house on Greenley Road Friday, Jan. 1, shortly after noon to find that the furnace had stopped working and a pipe had burst on the third floor. The water had seeped through to the lower floors, threatening ceilings and wood flooring. The owners of the property, which is up for sale, are in Australia. Firefighters tracked down the real estate agent.

In addition to the mess they discovered on Greenley Road, firefighters also responded to a call for assistance at a house on West Hills Road where a pipe burst on Christmas, and another about water coming out the wall at a house on Old Kings Highway on Dec. 30.

Fallen Transformer Sparks Brush Fire:

A tree fell in the wind Tuesday along the Silvermine River in the area of Valley and Mariomi Roads bringing a transformer down with it and igniting brush around 6 a.m. Firefighters were on the scene for more than an hour and a half putting out the fire and awaiting a Connecticut Light & Power crew.

En Route to Accident, Firefighters Find Car Fire:

Firefighters were dispatched at 1:18 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27 to an accident on the Merritt Parkway southbound near exit 37 that proved to be minor. On their way there, they came upon a car near exit 38 that had caught on fire due to a burnt clutch. They stayed on the scene of that incident until a wrecker arrived instead of helping with the clean-up further down the parkway.

Firefighters helped secure the scene of another accident involving two cars but no injuries on the other side of the highway at the start of rush hour Wednesday, Dec. 23, but were cancelled en route to a crash that resulted in no injuries or fluids spills Christmas Eve shortly before 3 p.m.

Spills Cleaned Up:

Firefighters spent 15 minutes at the scene of an accident at the intersection of Mead and Park Streets around 9 a.m. New Year's Eve where they applied a drying agent to the road.

A report of an oil odor on Forest Street at 5:34 p.m. that day yielded the discovery of a small oil slick. Firefighters checked out the condominium complex at 114-120 Forest St.

Someone called from 17 South Ave to report an oil odor on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 5:20 p.m. Firefighters found a small spill in the basement next door and applied a drying agent.

Smokey Living Rooms:

Between Christmas and New Year's Eve, firefighters responded to four alarms set off when smoke from a fireplace rolled back into houses. They helped ventilate a house on Riverbank Court Dec. 25 shortly before 9 p.m. Fireplace trouble prompted two calls from a house on Smith Ridge Lane over the holidays.

False Alarms—4:

Alarms at four houses were set off in error between Dec. 26 and Dec. 31, including one at a house on Weed Street where contractors accidentally cut the alarm wires just before noon Tuesday.

In addition, smoke from cooking set off alarms at five houses.
