Fire Log: Structure Fire Calls; High CO Levels

A return of construction work prompted numerous false alarms.

Structure Fire Calls Turn Out to Be Minor:

Four of New Canaan Fire Company No. 1's trucks hurried to Summer Street Saturday, April 3, after they received a report of a structure fire at 2:19 p.m.. Before firefighters arrived, police reported that a fire in the garage area was out. According to a dispatcher's report, the original caller had been out of breath when he stated, "It's on fire," and then "never mind," before hanging up.

The same four trucks were briefly at a house on Mariomi Road around 10 p.m. Monday, April 5, after a structure fire was reported there. Smoke from a bucket of smoldering mulch in the garage had traveled to the roof line, prompting the call about a possible attic fire.

Gas-Powered Saw, Malfunctioning Furnace Hike CO Levels:

A gas powered saw being used indoors at a house on Ponus Ridge Tuesday, April 6, sent the carbon monoxide level in the basement over 100 parts per million. Firefighters made sure the contractor using the saw ventilated the house before returning to work on the structure.

Firefighters were at a house on Evergreen Road for about 40 minutes Wednesday, April 7, helping to ventilate the structure after a malfunctioning burner elevated the CO level to about 100 ppm in the furnace room there.

Firefighters could not detect any elevated levels when a CO alarm sounded at a house on Lambert Road Sunday, April 4. The alarm was disconnected.

Another CO alarm sounded on Scofield Lane just before 7 a.m. Friday, April 9.

False Alarms Answered—8:
