Fire Log: Winter Weather Calls Out the Sirens

When things cooled down for New Canaan, things heated up for the Fire Department in the past week.

Heavy Snow Takes Down Wires:

After heavy rain turned to heavy snow, a tree fell on power lines on Sunset Hill Road around 1:20 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26; downed wires sparked a fire on Smith Ridge Road near Norholt Drive at 4 p.m. In both cases firefighters made sure the area was safe and notified Connecticut Light & Power.

Transformer Explosion Sparks Brush Fire:

The Fire Department got numerous calls from the Lantern Way Condos on Park Street the evening of Wednesday, Feb. 24, when a transformer blew starting a small brush fire on the ground. A crew from Connecticut Light & Power arrived about half an hour later and shut off power to the block at 9:05 p.m. to fix the problem. Some residents on the street (including this reporter) enjoyed a surprise candle lit, TV-free evening of laughter.

Car vs. Pole in Wintry Weather:

A car struck a pole on Ponus Ridge near Dan's Highway around 7 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26. EMS treated the patient at the scene while firefighters awaited the wrecker.

False Alarms—7:

New Canaan firefighters responded to seven calls over the past week later labeled as false alarms, including one at the Country School's Middle School Building where a power surge set off the alarm Wednesday evening.

The fire alarm at the Congregational Church and Nursery School at 23 Park St was activated accidentally by smoke from a fireplace around 9 p.m. Thursday. The alarm went off again shortly after 3 a.m. the following morning because the alarm was stuck in trouble mode.

Cooking set off the alarm at the Vegetable Barn and Deli at 22 Cross St Monday morning shortly before 10 a.m. Dust kicked up by cleaning set off the alarm at Sallea Antiques at 66 Elm St around 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

A report of a structure fire at a house on Lost District Drive Thursday evening also proved unfounded.
