Greenwich Man Killed, Two Others Injured in I-95 Crash

A 23-year-old Greenwich man was killed when the car he was driving struck a construction cone near southbound Exit 3 of I-95 early Thursday.

Two other Greenwich men were injured in the 3:46 a.m. crash, according to Connecticut State Police. Police had to close all three southbound lanes and one northbound lane as emergency personnel worked to rescue the victims.

According to police, Michael Defruscio of 10 Cobb Island Dr., Greenwich, was driving 2011 Infiniti when he struck a construction cone, causing him to lose control of the car. The car then struck the Jersey barrier and a Department of Transportation electronic sign trailer.

Defruscio was taken to Greenwich Hospital where he died. The passengers, identified as Samuel Lebreton, 22, of 40 Cognewaugh Rd., and Owen Burke, 23, of 11 Field Rd., both in Cos Cob, were taken to Stamford Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to a statement released by state police.

The area where the crash occurred is in a road repaving project along the I-95 corridor that has been ongoing for several weeks during the overnight hours.

With the roadway closed as crews worked at the accident scene, traffic was reported to be backed up to Darien, according to bulletins issued by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. The road was reopened around 8:30 a.m.

The accident remains under investigation.
