Greenwich Police Identify Drowning Victims as Grandmother and Grandson

Police say there is no indication the deaths are anything but "a tragic accident."

A 67-year-old grandmother and her 2-year-old grandson have been identified by Greenwich Police as the Thursday morning in a backyard pond.

Anna Furano and her husband Carmine were babysitting 2-year-old Massimo Thursday at the couple's 12 Fox's Ln. home in central Greenwich. Police said, "(there is) nothing to indicate that this was anything other than a tragic accident."

According to a statement issued shortly before 3 p.m. Friday, police said, "That at approximately 0900 hours Mr. Carmine Furano left the residence. At approximately 10:30 a.m. he returned to the house and located both within a koi pond. Both were found to be unconscious and unresponsive."

Police and the Greenwich Emergency Medical Service tried to revive the pair and brought them Greenwich Hospital where they were pronounced dead a short time later. Police have not identified the parents of the child who lived on Harold Avenue in Greenwich.

According to the police statement, "The Greenwich Police Department continues to investigate the circumstance surrounding this incident and is awaiting the results of an autopsy from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which has been scheduled for June 18."

Fox's Lane is a narrow, private driveway-like road between Columbus Avenue and Livingston Place, off West Putnam Avenue. According to Greenwich land records and police, there are six multi-family homes on the street.

Previously, police said, "The victims had apparently drowned within a relatively small and shallow manmade koi pond. ... the pond was constructed with a low stone wall and fence enclosure, the total height of which is approximately 2 ½-feet tall."
